Danny Thompson breaks wheel-driven land speed record at 448.757 mph (Bonneville Speed Week)

Danny Thompson, son of the late, great Mickey Thompson, fulfilled a lifelong dream when he shattered the piston-powered, wheel-driven land speed record at Bonneville with a blistering two-way average run of 448.757 mph Sunday.

“We did it!” Thompson wrote on the team’s website. “On Sunday morning, eight years of hard work culminated in a 450.909-mph return run. Averaged with yesterday's speed of 446.605 mph, we achieved a new two-way AA/FS record of 448.757 mph, enough to make us the world's fastest piston-powered car.”

Like all things that happen at 450 mph, it didn’t come easily.

“It got a little squirrely,” Thompson said. “I was almost lock to lock at around 430 mph, which was quite an experience.”

The demise of the IC piston engine is still aways off over the horizon. Much like Peak Oil....

Airliners fly at 500 mph. Take off is just over 100 mph.

Jet airliners. Piston airliners have a speed of about 350 mph.

Dad had a late 70s LTD with a 400 that could hit 100 or so.

The fuel gauge would drop as fast.

There is a paved strip NW of Dodge City which is in the middle of nowhere. It goes from a dirt road to paved then back to dirt. I have never seen another vehicle on that two or three mile strip.

I once got my F-250 with a 460, up to 140. The speedometer only went to 85 but the tach was at 6000 and calculating the speed from that, it had to be going over 140.

I hit 120 in my Mom's 1962 Buick Le Sabre in 1969. Young and dumb back then.

Tony Capanna and my dad built that car for the Summers Brothers - 408 plus mph and that record stood for decades. Chrysler Hemi power (4) - of course

Going a 100 or a bit more didn’t bother that Lincoln Trimmed Down one bit.

There is, of course, no substitute for Cubic Inches.
