Phillips was a beauty.
This group, hands down, had the best harmonies I’ve ever heard.
Before they were known as the Mamas and Papas they were called the Mugwamps. They used to perform regularly at the Shadows in D.C. and at Shadows II in Virginia Beach. Even back then Mama Cass wore her trademark big polka dot dress. I’m talking ‘62 to ‘64.
CSN&Y wasn't bad either. But you're right.
Also (and apropos of your screen name) The BeeGees weren’t too shabby on the harmony work either.
When I first heard them sing over the radio, I though they were a much larger group. I was surprised to find out that they were only a quartet.
"San Francisco" - Scott McKenzie
(One of the lines in that song - "...be sure to wear some flowers in your hair..." is sort of prescient, as that seems like a good idea if you have to go to S.F. today, in order to try to somewhat mask the stench of their public poop policy!)
John Phillips did amazing vocal arrangements to really bring out the harmonies...even superior to Brian Wilson’s for BB songs.
The “Wrecking Crew” was their studio band - not too shabby.
Amazing, they were together only 2.5 years.
