They do. The big thing here is collating between multiple sources. Stores keep track of what you buy and when, your card company keeps track of what you buy when and where, but now they compare the data with Google to find out what ads you saw before you bought what, when and where.
In my case, it depends what I’m buying. If I’m buying something that the government’s not interested in (i.e., 95% of my purchases), then I’ll use my card. They’re welcome to know what size underwear I wear, if that turns them on. Or what brand of mac and cheese I eat.
But if it’s ‘dual-use’, then I’m a bit more careful. No card, no phone, and ideally buying at a mall and parking far away, so as to make it harder to link me to a particular store.

this makes zero sense: chipped cards weren’t in wide use “several years back” ... have you got some other source for this information besides your nephew from several years back?

i especially use cash for gas as it’s a good way to use up cash ... i bite the bullet and make the two treks ... good exercise ... but i also have the time because i’m semi-retired ...

Considering I don’t EVER carry a Wallet or ID, they would have to go find what I drove there in to read anything because My ID and such is Always in what I drove, NEVER in my Pocket
Security cameras. They know who you are. They’ve known who you are for a long time. Read the Target chapter in The Power of Habit. And understand they had that level of ability to track your buying habits over TEN YEARS ago. The tech advances have only made it easier for them. They know who you are, they know where you live, and they send you targeted ads.

It took the NSA almost 3 years to figure out where my brother and I both moved to, both of us disappeared and neither of us lived at any address that was ever listed or known to anyone. Not until we came up did they find Both of us, actually pretty quickly, they were here inside of 3 months, my brothers too!!!
NO I can’t tell you why.
I pretty much use cash for everything,use a cheap flip phone(don’t think it has GPS),pay little or no attention to ads,only rarely purchase anything online,& then usually go through someone else to do it & pay them. The online ads are often so misleading that you can’t be sure what you’re getting for what you’re paying.
If you shopped at the same department store more that 4 times in that stretch THEY knew. Stores are much more motivated that the NSA, they need to stay in business, the NSA are just government toads. Really, read the chapter. They track people who only use cash, track them well enough that they can figure out within weeks when a woman becomes pregnant because of the changes in purchasing habits. They’ve been doing it for over a decade. There is NO privacy in this world.
I do not like being followed. Google and others will use any information about you and maintain a “permanent” file on you. You step out of line - in their opinion and you can be reported on to your employer as an example or the IRS as another and be punished for wrong thinking in their opinion.

Well the EMV card rolled out on October 1st 2016... So yeah my bad it was a couple years ago. it seems like it was longer than that, but... that’s the fog of age for you.
