Ohio State academic misconduct cases on the rise

The temptation to cheat is as old as the idea of administering exams and writing essays. As technology continues to evolve, cheating has become easier through the use of group chat apps like GroupMe and websites like Course Hero that let students share course materials. As a result, more Ohio State students are giving in to the temptation. A Lantern review of annual reports and statistics compiled by Ohio State’s Committee on Academic Misconduct reveals a large spike in the number of reported cases of cheating over the past four school years.

As long as there are academic exams there will be the temptation to cheat. The means to cheat and to detect cheating is now electronic. Is cheating ethical? Of course not, but is cheating using the internet any different than using cliff notes and compilations of old tests back in the day?

My English Literature prof was clever.

He would put stuff on the tests that were not in Cliff Notes, so you had to actually read the textbook!.................

The real cheating scandal is with the online courses. At least in classrooms there’s a decent chance that the person doing the work is actually the person who registered for the course.

You can bet that none of the academic luminaries on their football team are involved.

Oh, and I might mention U NC ‘Black Studies’ dept. equivalent of sleep studies.
They’re all a joke.
Think of Baylor, a fine Baptist school, and their thugish football team under Art Briles.
My granddaughter went there so I started following their team. Shocking. Surely not Baylor! Yep .

Let’s face it, demands for winning requires cutting integrity, academics, honesty, etc.

Great point. At least some of the more reputable on line programs offered by brick and mortar schools use camera/facial recognition tech for exams, lectures, and thesis defense. My daughter recently completed a nursing masters, and oddly enough the program encouraged student collaboration and use of other on line data/information services. I guess the field of medicine is governed by use of "best practices" and existing protocols. Original or outside of the box thinking is discouraged for physician extenders.
