Three supercars, a superbike, a Formula 1 car, a private jet and a fighter jet went head to head at a tech festival in Istanbul yesterday.

Five drivers raced alongside each other on a 400metre runway as the fighter jet and private jet took off next to them at Istanbul's new international airport.

The monumental race took place as part of the aviation, space and technology festival which is being held at the airport ahead of its official opening in October.

The vehicles included a Kawasaki H2R motorcycle, Tesla P100DL, Aston Martin New Vantage and Lotus Evora GT 430 - and there was a VERY close finish.

Make it a mile and the fighter wins hands down.

Without looking at the link, my guess would be the bike wins the first 100 meters, then the F1 car takes the lead, but if the race went a full 3000 meters, the fighter jet would cross the finish line first (in the air.)

“then the F1 car takes the lead”

Another 10 meters.

At the finish, F1 closing fast, Fighter 3rd but closing faster.

If they made it down to my post, they weren’t going to watch the video anyway.

LOL, true. But the Tesla sure gave the F1 and the Superbike a run for their money, at least off the line.

Make it a mile and the fighter wins hands down.

Give them a mile runway and a fence, and the fighter hits the fence.

(Laz would hit it too.)

40 years ago I flew the USMC Sikorsky CH-53D.

From a dead stop, side by side on two parallel runways, the CH-53D would beat an A-4 Skyhawk to 5,000 feet AGL and an F-4 Phantom to 4,000 feet AGL.

The moral of the story? You can set the parameters for a speed test so that almost anything can beat what is actually a much faster machine.

Usain Bolt would probably beat an F-15 in a 50 yard dash.

All of these vehicles would have been left in the starting blocks by a top fuel or nitro funnycar dragster.

"There’s an oldie but goodie on YouTube called Fast Freddie Spencer explains motorcycle road racing..."

I met Fast Freddie in the paddock after a Daytona 200 in which he had finished second to "King" Kenny Roberts. Roberts left the Winner's Circle in a track security car that drove him straight off the complex. Spencer, OTOH, left the Winner's Circle on foot and walked back to his paddock. I walked around for four hours, photographing bikes and schmoozing with riders and team staffers, and happened to come back by Spencer's paddock. He was still there, still dressed in his leathers, still surrounded by a throng of fans and still signing autographs.

And the phrase popped into my head, "Suffer the little children come unto me."

I don't care how badly Roberts (who is a known walking phallus) beat him, what I saw Spencer do that day was much more impressive.

LOL! God, that’s clever. Leave it to an engineer with a sense of humor.
