We visited Howe Caverns-—friends had a place in Summit,not too far from Cobleskill——we went every year,late 60s thru the 70s———I-88 was being constructed.

Press conference about crash at 3 eastern. Maybe we’ll learn more. It’s hard to grasp that many died in the limo- I can imagine a few, and many injuries, but the death toll seems extreme.

I’ve looked the photos available online and don’t see vehicle damage visible to the limo. Must be the angle of photos.
It does look like a pretty save intersection. The driver of the limo messed up. A flashing red light might help.

(AP) — A limousine on its way to a birthday party blew a stop sign at the end of a highway and plowed into a parked but unoccupied SUV, killing all 18 people in the limo and two pedestrians in the deadliest U.S. transportation accident in almost a decade, officials and a relative of one of the victims said Sunday.
The collision turned a relaxed Saturday afternoon into chaos at an upstate New York spot popular with tourists taking in the fall foliage, with witnesses reporting bodies on the ground and broken tree limbs everywhere. An aunt of one of the victims in the vehicle said the group had been on the way to a birthday celebration.
The 2001 Ford Excursion limousine was traveling southwest on Route 30 in Schoharie, about 170 miles (270 kilometers) north of New York City around 2 p.m. when it failed to stop at a T-junction with state Route 30A, State Police First Deputy Superintendent Christopher Fiore said at a news conference in Latham, New York.

The state just replaced a 4 way intersection near me with a traffic circle. Best thing to happen to local traffic in decades.
Average 2 wrecks a month because someone didn’t stop or tried to beat oncoming traffic.
No deaths but lots of cars totaled and people hospitalised.
Added benefit of keeping big trucks out of the village because the circle has a 40 foot restriction.
Log truck ignored the warnings last week and over turned in the circle. Hours cleaning the mess up.
State trooper said the driver will probably lose his CDL over the accident.
Looks nice. I should have headed down that way more when I lived there. We always headed north towards the Adirondacks, not so much to the Catskills.
On the question of whether the bride and groom were involved, turns out early reports were incorrect. Not wedding guests. They were on their way to a birthday party.
The region of Central New York is between the Adirondacks and the Catskills. There are some really beautiful places in the Catskills. I would recommend North Lake State Park/Campground, with nearby Kaeterskill Falls a must see. Finger Lakes region is also spectacular, Watkins Glen State Park being the highlight there.

I don’t understand how there aren’t more posts here speculating about terrorism. It seems like the most obvious answer. ‘Offended’ Muslim driving around drunk young women? Planes crash and there are survivors. A limo on the ground crashes and everyone inside dies??? He had to be absolutely flying when he crashed for everyone to die. I wouldn’t be surprised to find out that the women were already dead. Although I’m sure we would’ve heard it already. When will we get a name? If you hear, please let me know.
I’ve seen a witness quoted she thought that the limo had to have been going in excess of 60 MPH. Aftermarket stretch limos aren’t required to have side air bags. Occupants in the back aren’t required to buckle up. NYS had a bad stretch limo accident in 2015, IIRC, Cuomo, Schumer, Obama did nothing about regulating these types of vehicles.
If the vehicle was going that fast, nobody in the back was buckled, there were no airbags, I’m not surprised the death toll was so high.
As for what caused it, I’m wondering if rhe driver was impaired, either by drugs or a medical event, or if he vehicle’s brakes failed.
FWIW, terrorism is last on my list for this one.
The vics should have trusted their instincts.

Mostly from Amsterdam. 4 sisters, one sister and two brothers not in the car. The limo was substituted for a bus they rented but then was taken out of service. Can't imagine 18 people in a limo - this one was 18 years old, some say brake failure. The drover was said to be from Prestige Lim and was from Saratoga County. Large hill and perhaps he either: 1) Didn't know the road and never saw the stop sign 2) Brake failure The car was probably exceeding 60mph and pretty must stopped immediately when it hit a large steep embankment...60-0 with no safety belts or air bags probably means occupants had blunt force injuries at impact - not a single survivor. Very sad, almost sounds like too many people in a limo, they need huge brakes with that weight.
