In March of 1974 a mentally ill man attempted to kidnap the daughter of Queen Elizabeth II. It is the closest that a British royal has come to being kidnapped in modern times. In the harrowing moments of the attack, the attacker and the princess carried on "a tedious conversation."

My late wife wrote to her as a girl.
She did get an answer, I guess from her official letter writer. It told the obvious truth. That she appreciated all the letters she got but there were way too many for her to answer personally.
