What they can do: prevent you from continuing on, just as if they were on a military post.
CNN got that part wrong.
If they are set up in a location with the express purpose to prevent intrusion, you don’t get to waltz on by.

THey can defend the borders against invaders.

All Trump has to do is declare a border emergency with martial law on the border.

The media and the Left would go nuts, but it’s an external threat. It’s only a domestic law issue if we let it be.

Is there any precedent preventing active military from being deputized as Border Security ?

It would seem to me that if I was President and I COULD do it, I'd make the active and armed military a force directly attributable FOR border security.

Just because you don't WANT to shoot somebody shouldn't inhibit your DUTY to do so.

Cops face this every day and are trained to think in a certain fashion controlling bad shoots.

In the past they were not allowed to stop anyone, sometimes an alien will surrender to them but all they can do is call a border agent. I dont know what they will be allowed to do this time round, maybe they will be allowed to stop someone.

One thing to remember is that in the past they have not had ammunition so stopping someone was a safety concern since they may encounter someone who was armed.
