In the clip, we see the Avenger, which was hit hard by flak, limping back to the carrier. Once it lands, the rear turret gunner's cockpit is covered up and the aircraft is ceremoniously rolled off the fantail of the ship in a unique burial at sea. You see, Aviation Machinist Mate 2nd Class Loyce Edward Deen's body was so badly mangled from the anti-aircraft shell that took his life that it couldn't be removed from the torpedo bomber's rear cockpit.

Deen was just 23 years old when he died on that fateful mission. The operation he was participating in at the time of his death was the Battle Of Manila. It was two hours into a sortie when his Avenger, which belonged to Torpedo Squadron 15 (VT-15) based aboard the USS Essex (CV-9), was hit by anti-aircraft artillery, killing him instantly.

1944 USS Essex Loyce Edward Deen Burial at Sea "Going Home". (1min 38 sec)

Lyrics:

Goin' home, goin' home, I'm a goin' home; Quiet-like, some still day, I'm jes' goin' home. It's not far, jes' close by, Through an open door; Work all done, care laid by, Goin' to fear no more. Mother's there 'spectin' me, Father's waitin' too; Lots o' folk gather'd there, All the friends I knew, All the friends I knew. Home, I'm goin' home!

Nothin lost, all's gain, No more fret nor pain, No more stumblin' on the way, No more longin' for the day, Goin' to roam no more! Mornin' star lights the way, Res'less dream all done; Shadows gone, break o' day, Real life jes' begun. There's no break, there's no end, Jes' a livin' on; Wide awake, with a smile Goin' on and on.

Goin' home, goin' home, I'm jes' goin' home, goin' home, goin' home, goin' home!

Perhaps unrelated, but probably the worst job of WWII in the US armed forces would have been handling the retrieval and repair of damaged Sherman tanks.

After Vietnam I joined a tank company in the National Guard. Our vehicles were M-48A2’s upgraded to M-48A5 (diesel engine, 105mm main gun, etc).

Someone who had worked in a rebuild depot (Anniston?) said damaged tanks evac’d from theater contained all kinds of surprises including human remains. Tanks didn’t do well in jungle warfare and were in RVN for only a brief period.

I used to fly daily over a knocked out M-48 near our airfield.

This author tells this story bluntly but factually in yet another tribute to the fallen. I am doubtful though that this is the only time this kind of thing took place.

My Mom and Dad told me how what was left of young men was washed out of 8th Air Force bombers so the planes could be used for parts or patched up and sent out again. Not even enough parts to send home and of course just a telegram saying “your son died. sorry.”

We sometimes send these things out but why? it is not for gee whiz, my that’s interesting. For me it is because this is what I think about when I wonder why so many things are wrong. Why are so many unmoved by these sacrifices and not understand why they are made and why are so many moved to destroy traditions that are so good and right to so many of us?

Doesn’t anyone who disrespects our country disrespect these young men who went to do what the nation told them to do because it had to be done many times. If the wars were not honorable the boys who served and died as directed have surely earned respect and deserve to be honored by how the nation they served is managed and how we who benefit from living here behave. The disrespect extends beyond these young men to their families who live today.

I hate the Jim Acostas who debate decorum when they must know they are wrong, the socialists who are accepted and given free reign because it is their “right” in spite of our rights and what we agreed to be a standard, the teachers who fall in line with revisionist teaching or omissions, the asylum seekers who only take and never assimilate, the parents who are no better and even worse, kids being taught to celebrate diversity and that national pride is somehow wrong. We have come to stand for very little and almost nothing and some of us and some before us have been saying this for a long, long time. Just trying to live a good example has not been nearly enough.

Washing, scraping, and scooping human remains out of vehicles is something that has been described by Vets of every war, including the recent/current wars in Iraq/Afghanistan. The grisliness of it really hits home, and it’s not something that is often considered.. When you think of strong young men, in peak physical condition, full of piss and vinegar and life, reduced to stomach-turning pieces of smashed humanity to be unceremoniously mopped out of a vehicle that has to go out again...It’s haunting and every scumbag who pisses on a monument should be forced to watch this clip on a loop.

L-19’s were before my time; observation or fire direction missions were flown by OH-6 LOH’s. I flew Hueys 1971-72. Two `slick’ companies traded missions; one week was formations carrying infantry to LZs. The alternate week was single ship `ash & trash’, carrying cargo or individuals to the FSBs and you navigate on your own to get from the airfield to Point B.

It was during those flights that I saw some interesting stuff; the old tank, a monastery or pagoda, remains of a Jap Zero on a mountain top, French villas from colonial days, etc.

“I hate the Jim Acostas...”
______________________________________

The anger is quick-fire. Once you accept that but for the grace of God your attitude would be just like his, he’s much more in need of pity....

Having walked that Leftist Path, I see the seduction so much more clearly from this side. Also, from this side I see how it’s so easy for us to build up hatred on our own earthly/fleshly anger.

Even if it is over a true injustice, don’t allow the earthly/fleshly anger to dominate. Reach for that pity so you can ask the Lord God for either a Revelation for Acosta or a stumbling block (a pox, if you will) that will stop him from further poisoning minds.

It’s not that I don’t get the earthly anger/fleshly rage. Far from it. Then the Lord God reminds me gently and sometimes not so gently with memories of my past.

I still view the media as a Threat to our nation. Whether we see this nation rise and become again what our Founders envisioned is left for another day.

In the end it’s still in God’s hand and His hand will always prevail.

Lifting you up, Sequoyah101. There are those in your life who depend upon your good judgment to be around....
