Say what you will about Colt McCoy, but he knew exactly how fleeting his opportunity would be to start for the Washington Redskins.
This is the second chance he had waited years to find.
So, even after breaking his leg on a play in the first half vs. the Philadelphia Eagles, he stayed in the game.
Even hobbled, he completed his next two passes for five and 10 yards, taking the Redskins into field goal range where Dustin Hopkins put D.C. on the board.
From there, McCoy was finally coaxed out of the game and into the locker room, where an X-ray revealed the worst-case scenario: a season-ending injury.
McCoy will finish the season on injured reserve.
This comes just two weeks after quarterback Alex Smith broke his leg in a game against the Texans on November 18
McCoy relieved Smith and journeyman QB Mark Sanchez relieved McCoy Monday night against the Eagles.
Sanchez, the 5th overall pick in the 2009 draft, finished 13-21 for 100 yards and an interception. The Skins lost 28-13.
Incredible! Some would say heroic, others may say stupid.
He must have drank a whole lot of ‘Gatorade’ to block the pain.
Goes into the Legends Book next to Bobby Baun, who finished Game Six of the 1964 Stanley Cup Finals on a broken leg and scored the overtime winner for the Maple Leafs.
And the Olympics Gymnast girl that had a broken ankle and still won gold..............
He just rubbed some dirt on it!..................
...and took a salt tablet.
Hate it for both QBs, especially Colt who has been patiently practicing and waiting for that opportunity for a long time.
But what strikes me is that the Skins made a few moves and put out a lot of cash to suck that bad in that defensive backfield. Either way, stick a fork in them,,, again. Time to overhaul starting with Dan Snyder and Bruce Allen.
This is the stuff of which leg-ends are made!...............
I will just say that it all depends on the type of break. I’ve had 2 breaks my pinky and my wrist.
My pinky was broken trying to catch a football that hit that finger edge on. My “reset” by my roommate as we both thought it was just dislocated. It was cold, I felt no pain and played the rest of the game. Went down the next morning to make sure there was no soft tissue damage and was told it was a spiral fracture...very hard to set. Doc said my roommate should be a orthopedist.
My wrist was a standard backward fall catching myself. Broke off the tip of on of the arm bones. A very common break caused in that situation. Sore at the time - enough I stopped what I was doing, but I only went in the next day when it was still swollen. Bone wasn’t displaced but still required a cast.
He likely had a fracture that was similar if he was able to still put weight on it. Likely not all the way through. Still it is weight bearing so likely hurt a lot.
Fractured fibula......................
Dang quitter!... I seem to remember a Giants QB who had a worse injury, but completed the game...and won... The best QB the Giants ever had: Y.A. Tittle...
The there was John Unitas... He had his lips torn away from his face and they stapled him up and sent him back into the game...
More from the bio of hockey’s Bobby Baun:
In the fifth game of the 197273 season, he suffered a neck injury after a hit from Mickey Redmond that ended his NHL career at the age of 36. Baun played with a broken leg as well as having a skate cut his neck. Tim Horton found him outside the tour bus and carried him to local hospital where he was found to be hemorrhaging. After many pints of blood, he was placed next to his wife who was giving birth to their third son
And Jack Youngblood who played in Super Bowl XIV with a fractured fibula.
Jack Youngblood, L.A. Rams - One of the athletic feats for which Youngblood is best known, is that of playing the entire 1979 playoffs, including Super Bowl XIV, with a fractured left fibula. He also played in the 1980 Pro Bowl with the injured leg, a week after the Super Bowl.
That was pretty close.
Bear Bryant broke a leg in a college game and stayed in. Legendary but perhaps a bit stupid.
Frustrating few weeks for the Redskins.
“The there was John Unitas... He had his lips torn away from his face and they stapled him up and sent him back into the game...”
If Weeb Ewbank was the coach John didn’t have much choice.
Art Donovan broke his leg against the Eagles and Weeb kept him in the game telling him “if you can’t run you can get in their way. And make sure you fall in THEIR way.”
A Colts defensive player once said Weeb demanded a weeks notice before you were allowed to die.
I always thought Theisman should have finished-out the game in which he was “injured”’. Maybe with quarterback-keep runs.
