Kyler Murray Wins Heisman Trophy

NEW YORK CITY - Kyler Murray won the Heisman Trophy Saturday night, the seventh Oklahoma Sooners football player to win college football's most coveted award.

Murray beat out Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and Ohio State signal caller Dwayne Haskins for the honor, handed out in New York City in front of a national television audience.

Murray's win one year after Baker Mayfield's is the first back-to-back Heisman win for one school since Army West Point's Doc Blanchard and Glenn Davis did it back in 1945 and 1946.

Murray led the nation in total yards with 4,945 and had 51 touchdowns this season. He congratulated Tagovailoa and Haskins, thanked God, the Heisman Trust, voters, and Coaches Bob Stoops and Lincoln Riley.

He also thanked his linemen, scout team, defense, nutrition staff, parents, uncle, siblings and the Sooner Nation.

Oklahoma's next order of business is the Orange Bowl national semifinal versus Tagovailoa and Alabama on Dec. 29. The winner of that game takes on the winner between Clemson and Notre Dame on January 7 in Santa Clara, California.

The smartest thing Choklahoma could have would have been to pull Murray’s name from consideration. They’d be smart not to show up for their date with Alabama.
Woulda been a blowout anyway; it’s suddenly turned into a potential massacre.

Murray earned it and deserved it. I trust the selecting/voting group.

However:

Good chance to see who is the best qb and who leads team to a win. The awards committee just might have egg on their faces.

Haskins is the best passer. Tua is the best athlete. Murray has the best attributes of both.

Two things here:

1. Murray probably deserved this, but I also think there's sometimes a bias in favor of a player in his last year over someone who has a chance to win the trophy again the following year.

2. Murray's win one year after Baker Mayfield's is the first back-to-back Heisman win for one school since Army West Point's Doc Blanchard and Glenn Davis did it back in 1945 and 1946. ... Uh, no. Archie Griffin of Ohio State won the Heisman Trophy in 1974 and 1975. Doesn't anyone do any research for these articles?

I’m definitely not a fan of Ohio State but saw a bit of Haskins and he certainly looks like a NFL passer - accurate with power/velocity.

OTOH, I saw Tua in the Georgia game and he looked more awkward than athletic and definitely not a prototypical NFL passer. I was not impressed by this overhyped “QB”.

Did not see Murray but his stats look quite good.

Tua was suffering from a severe high ankle strain that occurred on their fourth offensive play of the game but he still tried to gut it out.

He just underwent a surgical procedure to repair the injury earlier this week and is moving around with help from a scooter. Hopefully he'll be 100% by the Orange Bowl on Dec. 29

Kyler Murray was the right selection.

I was struck by Tua’s poor/awkward throwing mechanics that certainly was not related to his ankle - seemed to be more “forced” vs “fluid”.

I simply find his core QB skills quite lacking...esp at a NFL level.

And Murray may never play a down in the NFL. He's already got a US$5 million contract with the Oakland A's organization and look at the guaranteed contracts that MLB players get.

If you can’t put weight on the front foot during the throwing motion, you’re not going to have good mechanics. And for a QB, it’s all about footwork........Whatever

QB101:

Actually, an athletic QB with good arm motion skills can throw even with a sore ankle. Of course, the velocity will be impacted.

Tua lacks basic/proper athletic throwing skills/arm motion and, unless he develops quality throwing skills, he'll never make it as a passing NFL QB.

Tua's just a new version of Tim Tebow - an athlete but not an athletic passing QB.

You’re right, Tua did look out of sorts against Georgia, but the rest of the year, he was nothing less than amazing most of the time...it’s not hype, the kid can play!

What is it with Polynesians and football lately? I mean, I'm not a football fan but I don't recall Polynesian names being thrown around in the 60s or 70s.

When did they become football players? When they converted to mormonism?

I mean, I knew Samoans were bad guy professional wrestlers, but this is ridiculous!
