No way it will last. Marriage is hard enough already.

I was in the Army in 1979, stationed at Fort Hood, alone and away from home. I figured I'd get a foreign pen-pal to help pass the time. I went to the library and researched Australian newspapers and put personal ads in three of the main ones. I got about 15 or so responses and, of those, one was an Australian lady five years my senior. We wrote back and forth, talked on the phone, exchanged photos, for over a year and, when I was assigned to Korea in 1980, I flew to Australia on February 13th and we were married on 14 February, Valentine's Day.

We were still happily married when she died of health complications in 2005.

So it can work ...

Sometimes these crazy weddings do work. So, although you (and I) have more sense than to do something so rash, this is not entirely completely hopeless.

I actually love stories like this. While it is true that the lawyers and the government have destroyed the institution of marriage, I’m a big believer in love.

I’m also a big believer that we’re in this together and better as a team than alone.

I think people should be ‘marrying’. I also think the state needs to stay out of it, because as you so aptly point out, it’s hard enough without involving them too.

I’d love to see the followup story on this one. But who knows, maybe they end up staying married for 50 years. Stranger things have happened.

If one is not married by 35, don’t even think about it.

I know a good number of families from India. Some literally met at the altar. As far as I know, happily married. I don’t know how, but it works
