Even in my parents childhood, people out here in the boonies packed fresh eggs in kegs of salt and ate them all winter, no refrigeration (and at that time, d***ed little heat in the house, too).

In the winter when living in a dormitory in Iowa we used to keep spare food in the space between our windows and the storm windows. Worked just fine.
