The pay is just as good, or better.

The signing bonus and first year salary he would get as an early first round NFL pick would dwarf the $4.7 million and minor league salary the A's are offering him.

That’s what I was thinking, if he goes in the 1st round, he’ll make more money in one or two years than he might in his entire baseball career.

And if he doesn’t end up making it in football, it’s not like you can’t break into baseball a couple of years later, if he was good enough to play.

And as a quarterback, he is less likely to suffer severe damage — it is almost impossible for a professional quarterback to be hit in the head without a penalty, and while a couple of gruesome injuries happen each year to quarterbacks, most are not the kind that would keep him from playing baseball.
