The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds.
From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed any time-and don't have to be about gardening.
Thanks. I don’t have any experience with any of those things like flicker. Some day, I may have time to fiddle with it, and I’ll keep you in mind.
I don’t recall. Hubby has all the details upstairs. He’ll be calling them Monday. Thanks for the questions and hints, I’ll ask him about them.
No problem. I have had my wood burning stove insert running for 20 years and for 15 with the stainless plumbing. Just shoot me a message if you want my opinion on anything. The double wall stainless is worth it. My single wall steel plumbing corroded through at the spot it went outdoors and fell off the roof after 5 years.
Fotki is telling me I have reached my FREE limit for storage but that is over a few years...
OK. Thanks.
My account is with Flikr and not Fotki and I payed my dues so I ‘m good to go...
I HOPE!
LOL.
The door gaskets do not last long. I usually keep two of the correct diameter and length as well as two of the high-temperature adhesive tubes. The recommended procedure for replacing gaskets is on YouTube, but is basically to put the gasket in water before putting adhesive on the slot in the door and putting the gasket in. The adhesive is silicone silicate and is water soluble so a moist, but not too wet gasket will wick up the adhesive. You need to let the gasket dry, but close the door, but not full tightness. Then within 30 days you need to fire up the fireplace to fuse the adhesive, again do not close to full tightness.
I run my stove over half of the year so I have to replace the gasket every year. Reduced use will not need replacement as often.
At the roof line the temps are not so high and a high-temp silicone is good for weather sealing.
You will need to dump ashes after every week or so of use. There will be hot embers. I have a 3-gallon metal bucket and I put ashes and embers in that, pour water on it and leave it outside for a week, then I empty ashes in the snow-filled ditch and cover with more snow before emptying new ashes. You can put ashes in the garden if you don’t burn plastics.
I used to use tinypic almost exclusively, but in recent years they have become overrun with ads.
me too.
Millions of pix...
We more than likely won’t use it a lot, unless we get a lot of inflation hitting our electric bill. Even with the fireplace we have it was always close to 80s.
We actually have fans/blowers that were built into our fireplace. The insert will help with the more complete burn as well as allow a longer time between loading the wood into the fireplace.
Thanks for all the hints. I’ll print them for hubby. I know he’s done a lot of research, but he can double check to see if there’s anything he might have missed.
OK, hope it helps. Shoot me a message if you want my opinion on anything.
Last weekend when it was 40ish, I was out laying down a bunch of mulch I bought late in the fall.
Since all the plants are dead and dormant, I cleared out some of the remaining dead debris and laid down a bunch of my mulch.
Nice break in the winter and it’ll be done so there’s less work in the spring.
It’ll look good from the get go.
It was great to get out in the yard again.
Rumor has it that we need to keep an eye on the 24th or so for a nor’easter.
Monday and Tues look pretty good, upper 20’s and sunny.
Might want to stock up before the next cold snap next weekend.
Will do. Thanks.
It was. We enjoyed the respite here too. The rain I mentioned earlier has changed back into snow.
I heard on the news that St. Louis got a foot last night. My daughter had to drive home from work. It took her about 5 hrs. to go 75 miles.
This morning we’re wet & slushy snow/ice - we had snow until the wee hours, then some sleet/freezing rains. Temps are now above freezing so it’s all rain ... might return to snow again this afternoon. At least with this storm, we did not need to get out the big tractor to clear the driveway.
Friday, I made two batches of Blackberry Merlot Jelly from some blackberries that were bought & frozen a good while back. In mid-November, when I harvested the pepper bushes for the last time, I had enough red jalapenos for only one batch of Jalapeno Pepper Jelly & enough green ones for one batch of “Cowboy Candy” (first time I’ve made this recipe - still waiting for feedback to determine if I’ll make it again).
The extremely wet conditions last summer resulted in a very low tomato crop - some relatives, living about a 100 miles away, had almost total garden failures - most gardens in that area were just plowed under. No salsa was made last summer - very disappointing.
It’s been so wet the last couple of months that I cannot do any of the projects around here that I want to do this winter - fields are so soggy that pulling any sort of a cart results in bogging down. Last week, my dad got his golf cart stuck in a field & we had to pull him out with the garden tractor. It took several tie-down straps to do it because we had to keep the garden tractor fairly far away and on high enough ground that it didn’t get stuck, too. Even so, the tractor’s back wheels were doing some spinning at times & I had to change position twice to the wheels from spinning/making ruts.
We’ve had some mild days in December & early January that have had me longing to be able to get started & plant the garden, but of course it’s months too early (& I don’t have a green house). The Polar Vortex has split & long range weather for us looks “arctic” so we’ll just have to hunker down & ride out what looks like some true, cold winter weather on the way & maybe more snow storms in the near future .... while we stay warm & enjoy our Blackberry Merlot jelly! :-)
Recipe if anyone wants it - this stuff gets rave reviews & people I’ve given it to are all but begging for a jelly jar refill:
Just got my rareseeds.com catalog from Baker Creek Seed Co.
