NARRAGANSETT, R.I. (AP) — An out-of-place pelican and an injured owl will likely remain stranded at a Rhode Island wildlife facility until the end of the partial federal government shutdown.
The Providence Journal reports that the juvenile brown pelican — likely steered north by high winds — had become a sensation to bird watchers and dock workers who nicknamed him “Bert.”
The bird was taken to the Wildlife Rehabilitators Association of Rhode Island as temperatures dropped, where executive director Kristin Fletcher says they can’t get the needed federal permits to move him to a southern location.
Fletcher says the group also has an owl with a severe eye injury. It had been slotted for transfer to Massachusetts for life-saving surgery, but its travels are also on hold.

The shutdown may take an owl's sight away.
Unless that’s some special magical owl that grants wishes, it is absolutely insane to be doing surgery on it, and on the public treasury’s dime no less.
It is a bird let mother nature take it course.
Not worth spending a dime on.
The dems will register both Pelican and Owl to vote.
Thet do not discriminate, and register illegal immigrants to vote as well. IN California its called “ballot harvesting.”

A federal permit is required for a bird to cross a state line, but Dems want illegals to cross national boundaries without restriction.
So there is equivalency between being forced to spend billions of dollars yearly and losing hundreds of lives to illegal aliens and an owl’s misfortune? Isn’t it Leftists who quote, “the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few?” Certainly if they were unborn children they’d be sacrificed. But an owl! Stop everything! We have to surrender because there is an owl at risk. “Eve’a buddy stand back or he shoot the owl!”
Note: They left out staving children and minorities. Oh, and injured kittens, who are much more photogenic than owls. What were they thinking!?
Both birds are receiving care. And the owl does not need a special permit to have care for the eye. Depending on the state, DVMs just need to apply for a state wildlife rehabilitation license - they don’t don’t even need to take the exam or do the preceptorship.
Just an awful article by AP. It provides no information on care options for the birds or how rehabilitation words for birds.

This is got to be the world’s stupidest story blaming the shutdown for something. There are hundreds of thousands of birds maybe Millions every day that are injured or killed in some way. And we’re supposed to believe that because the government is shut down somehow we’re complacent in this.
Who gives a hoot?
They are reaching a particular demographic. There are a fair number of people who care more for a bird than for hundreds of people.
It is just how they emote. I had a girlfriend who got all teary over a pigeon being affected by tear gas during riots.
To her, the pigeon was "innocent" but the people were knowing actors.
That is the demographic they are aiming at.

Some ones priorities need realignment.
