Jussie Smollett is not officially a suspect in the Chicago PD investigation, despite multiple sources inside the department who tell us he is squarely just that.
We reached out to Chi PD and asked if the status of the "Empire" star has officially gone from victim to suspect. We were told ... "We have some information that needs to be corroborated and verified with the Empire cast member before we can answer this question. After new developments, we've reached out to his attorney and requested additional time to interview him."
It actually makes sense ... the cops are playing the case close to the vest, so witnesses aren't influenced by police statements. As we reported, there was a sentiment early on in the Department Jussie's story didn't track, but officially they never let on.
As we reported, the 2 brothers with connections to both "Empire" and Jussie "completely cooperated" with cops during their interrogation, and they made it clear ... their participation was at the behest of Jussie.
Jussie's lawyer has indirectly lashed out at the brothers, doubling down that Jussie is a victim and "anyone claiming otherwise is lying."
As we reported, at least one of the brothers turned over his phone to cops and there's a call between him and Jussie in the vicinity of the "attack," but before it happened.
There are multiple reports the brothers bought the rope in question at an Ace Hardware store in Chicago.
We're told so far ... Jussie has not agreed to another interview with cops.

From the beginning, TMZ has defended Jussies despite questions about facts and details.
Now TMZ seems to be claiming they too believe there were legitimate questions about Jussies' account of the alleged attack.

“According to these new reports, the Osundairo brothers told the police they staged attack was scheduled to take place before January 29 and that they had practiced the scenario days before it finally went down. Smollett is said to have paid for the rope they used in the attack, purchased in the Ravenwood neighborhood’s Crafty Beaver Hardware Store on January 25.
“One brother allegedly held the rope around Smollett neck and poured bleach over him during the 2 AM attack, while the other wore the MAGA hat, purchased at an Uptown beauty supply store, and shouted racist and homophobic slurs.
So Smollett’s account was basically true - they really did wear a MAGA hat and pour bleach over him. There’s just that one small detail....
Wow. Far more elaborate than I suspected. I figured he just made it all up, but he went all out.
"brother" - is that a double entendre? Or are Nigerians not counted in the "bruthahood"?
Chicago detectives played this perfectly from the get-go. The awful thing is how much money and resources (calls, data, visits, forensics and on and on) were wasted on this twisted scu bag that could have gone to real criminal cases. HE MUST make FULL restitution of these costs, in addition to prison time.
Let the 3 fight it out in the press. Either way the red hat wearing redneck is innocent.

They proceeded to carry out this investigation knowing the longer it went on the greater the chances Jussie would trip himself up.
Although the slow trickle of information is frustrating I want the CPD to cross every T and dot ever lower case I.

Those nominations are all well-deserved! But Smollett made one mistake, and it was a big one. He talked to the police.
Instead, he should have just called a news conference to report all the terrible details. And said there was no use in talking to the police, as they are all racists. And then set up a GoFundMe account.
If Smollett had done only that, he would have been a permanent liberal hero. He might have even gotten himself his own talk show.
The Chicago PD ain’t shy about prosecuting people for fake hate crimes regardless of the race of the person filing the false police report. Smollet’s celebrity rather than his race may be why they’re slow-walking it.
