ANCHORAGE (KTUU) - The long-awaited start of the 47th Iditarod Trail Sled Dog race is kicking off Saturday, March 2. Channel 2 will be LIVE in the heart of downtown Anchorage as the mushers get ready, and take off for the ceremonial start.
KTUU Live coverage will begin at 9:30 a.m. You can watch that coverage online by clicking here or when this story updates.
Snow was trucked out downtown to compensate for otherwise clear city streets, giving the dog teams something soft to run on until they complete the short ceremonial run down 4th Avenue. Dogs will run from D Street all the way to the Campbell Airstrip, a distance of 11 miles, where the teams load up and prepare for Sunday's official restart in Willow, Alaska.
The mushers will begin to depart at 10 a.m. at the starting line of 4th Ave. and D St. in two- and three-minute increments.
The first musher to depart, wearing Bib No. 1, will be this years honorary musher, carried by the Junior Iditarod champion. The final musher will leave the starting line just before noon this year. Channel 2 will broadcast from downtown ahead of the start.
If you want to watch the action in person, 4th and D is where the best views are. The mushers head down 4th Ave., turn south onto Cordova Street, and hit the Chester Creek Trail system once they reach 16th Avenue, near the Sullivan Arena.
From there, sled teams take the trail system to the Campbell Airstrip, where the teams will load up and prepare for Sundays start in Willow.

Iditarod Alaska ping!!
Thanks for the reminder! Beau LOVES that race and follows it on-line every year.
Right now he’s off plowing snow, (we’re well above average this season, but - Cha-CHING!) so I’ll remind him to check in this evening. :)
Probably warmer than mid-America right now.
Good luck to Jesse Holmes. Stick it PETA.
Iron Dog, a couple of weeks ago, now the Iditarod.
Some tough people and dogs!
Thank You for the ping and post Morgana 😊
