The phrase "stupid Newfie" was chanted several times by the show's characters...

Years ago I dated a woman who grew up in Nova Scotia and she always used to refer to "Newfies" (meaning people from Newfoundland) and she'd do so in a somewhat dismissive way...a way that suggested that "Newfies" were seen as Canada's "rednecks" or something.

Good lord,I laughed when I read this.

I grew up in a Boston three-decker.

My mother was from Nova Scotia-——the woman downstairs was from Newfoundland——my Mom spoke about our neighbor the way that your old girlfriend spoke about “Newfies”..

There’s a movie about Newfies and their ways: The Shipping News.

I’m not Canadian but I get the impression that Newfies are considered more like ‘very strange’ as opposed to just redneck.
