New Data Shows We’re Still Sitting Way Too Much. Does Exercising Cancel It Out?

Are you sitting down? This might be one you’ll want to read standing up, or even better, walking around a little: Despite all the warnings about prolonged inactivity and “sitting disease” over the past decade, Americans are sitting one hour per day longer than they did nine years ago, according to a new study published in JAMA.

Adults now spend 6.5 hours parked on their behinds each day. The sitting situation is even worse for teens, who now sit for more than 8 full hours a day, according to researchers from Washington University School of Medicine, who analyzed survey data from nearly 52,000 children, adolescents, and adults from 2001 to 2016.

Unsurprisingly, screen time is largely to blame. Sixty-five percent of adults, 59 percent of adolescents, and 62 percent of kids spend at least two hours a day sitting in front of the TV or watching videos on a device each day.

Sedentary computer time skyrocketed among adults from 2003 to 2016, according to the study. Half of all adults now spend an hour or more each day on their computer during their leisure time, up from 29 percent 13 years prior.

These trends are especially troubling in light of research that shows that the more hours you sit each day, the higher your risk of dying early from any cause.

All hope is not lost, however. Though previous research has found that multiple days of being extremely sedentary makes you resistant to the benefits of a bout of exercise, a newly published study on so-called “high sitters” (those sitting more than 6 hours a day) shows that consistent exercise can indeed counteract the ill effects of lots of forced chair time: It’s just a matter of getting regular activity.

since the AMA chose to publish this, they may wish to stop writing all their bullship advocating gun grabbing (which the citizens of USA would never ever cooperate with, let happen here, anyway!)....

sitting around writing such krap..only wastes time, pollutes the public discourse,.....and makes the AMA authors fatter and in worse physical condition.

smile smile

maybe they’d like to buy pistols and sign up for a good training class in how to shoot accurately while running

I’m loving my Fitbit Versa. It reminds me every 10 minutes before the hour to get my steps in. I have a “Stamina InMotion E1000 Compact Strider” that I go over and do 150 quick steps with resistance and both my watch and I are happy.

I am trying faithfully to get my 10,000 steps in per day at least 5 out of 7 days.

I’m diabetic and my sugars are doing real good now. I was messing around with levels above 200 and now I am right around the 100 mark. (That includes limiting my carbs to 150-200 per day).

At least you’re typically not sitting when you’re shooting.

AMA virtue signalers cannot get guns correct, why believe them?

Liars is liars.

AMA wants high drug prices. Let us talk how excess Big Pharma pills hurt the body organs.

Any kind of a pedometer is a must for those who are normally inactive (such as myself). It really does serve to motivate you to get up and move around more. If I don't hit 10,000 steps for the day, I feel guilty. It does take some discipline to get to the 10,000 steps on a regular basis.

Most mobile devices these days have pedometers built in. For instance, my Apple iPhone tracks every step I take (so long as i have the phone with me) and it's pretty accurate.

Either that or get a dog. Dogs will also motivate one to get some steps in.

Took my blood pressure this weekend and was a perfect 120/80. Not bad for somebody in their mid-50s. I'm now going on five months with zero added sugars in my diet - feels good!

All you have to do is sit like this dimbocrat here all day, and all those problems are solved.   (The problem then is just getting back down again, without serious injury...)

There is only one way to lose weight. Fasting.

I rarely sit, so I’m good. I recline a lot, however.

I’m 66 and after cutting up a mountain of cardboard to fit into our mandatory recycling bin, spraying weed killer on 200 feet of gravel driveway, hauling out the gas grill, walking my dog and doing two loads of laundry, I am now sitting down before I fix dinner. I will then remain seated for the rest of the evening.

By their reckoning, I'm doomed. :-)

Ain't we all---most of us anyway.

I'm thinking of sitting at this laptop an hour or two and seeing if any exercise and diet sites bear this out. Unless I fall asleep reading.

Oops, missed my circuit training workout today. And yesterday.

I’ve always been in decent shape. Began fasting a year ago. Six days a week I fast for 20 hours and one day a week 44 hours. (Or does that calculate to five and one?)

It’s good.

(Eat 30% less and live 30% longer.)

Now we're setting somewhere. Like Millenials we can blame FR and never have to take responsibility for our own lives. Sounds good./s

I'll think that over as I read posts for another 1-2 hours.

I would love to be able to go for long walks. But lumbar spinal stenosis put an end to that.

Close.

You can also be a teenage guy on the track team running 10 miles a day.

And fasting has to be done right, or your body goes into starvation mode and weight loss stops.

Since I retired last year I’ve stopped eating an evening meal. I make sure to eat a good breakfast and lunch and then maybe fruit in the evening. This keeps me from gaining weight now that I’m more sedentary.

No starvation mode, I went one week, no eat. You just resume back to normal but a lower set point.

The biggest problem with fasting is other people’s nonsense beliefs. People know nothing about their human body. Nothing.

Eating less aka fasting is learning to ride a bicycle from scratch. Challenge everything and every false belief others have. Over time you get better and smarter at it.

Fasting knowledge builds and builds.

After awhile, you can quit eating at will, as long as you want, whenever you desire. Just keep learning it.

Fasting is custom tailored to each person’s specific needs and lifestyle. You will get there, reduced weight, where you want it. It works. Be patient. Keep learning.

Good for you! 15 x body weight = daily calories to maintain weight.

15 x body weight - 500 = daily calories to lose 1 pound per week.

10 x body weight = daily calories to extend life.

Eating for a set few hours per day coupled with (even casual) daily exercise = a different metabolic chemistry which uses fat for fuel rather than lean tissue. Noticeable, consistent fat loss.

Also = your body (fairly quickly) adapts to one meal time.

How many times and when we eat is habit backed by a specific hormone. The habit and hormone dissipate in a day or three is all. Eating a little throughout the day will net out in more nagging hunger than will one meal.
