BUDAPEST (Reuters) Prospects were minimal on Thursday for finding 20 people missing from a group of South Korean visitors aboard a pleasure boat that capsized on the flooding Danube in the Hungarian capital, killing at least eight, authorities said.

Minimal hope for the survivors?
Egad!
I’m glad I’m only reading this now. My daughter took a short boat ride on the Danube through Budapest two weeks ago!
I am currently in Hungary at my house near the Balaton.
The nation is shocked by this. Of course, fears of how this impacts tourism (season is just starting) is a secondary concern.
Sometimes you can be a little too concise. Obviously they meant “Minimal hope for finding survivors.”
RIP.
My wife is aching to take a Danube cruise, but does not like ships. This may cool her enthusiasm.
I wonder what will happen to the donaudampfschifffahrtskapitan?
Hopefully, it doesn’t. Hungary is a beautiful country with a rich history and great people.
Well worth visiting. I was there in 1995 and again in 1996. Loved every minute.
It has only become more incredible since your last visit.
I’ll bet!
I was in the US Air Force then, and went to help set up some communications networks with the Hungarian military after the fall of the Soviets and the Hungarian Communists.
These guys were great guys and told me about stories of the Uprising in the 1950s.
Anyway, when I was there, they were just starting to rebuild.
I MUST go back some day! I lived in Germany for four years. I’d rather remember what it was like, than to see what hostile Muslims have done to it.
Hungary, on the other hand, has stood strong against the invasion. God bless them!
My wife and I had a dinner cruise in Budapest last year. It was glorious. Good food and good cheer and not too expensive. The Danube at night is a sight to see. For my money, it puts the bateaux-mouches cruises on the Seine totally in the shade. The true City of Light is Budapest, not Paris.
“The boat collided with a much larger luxury passenger boat during a rainstorm late on Wednesday near the parliament building, capsized and sank with some 30 tourists on board. The cause of the collision was under investigation.”
How sad.
So did I, sounds like same type of boat! When our group went (during daylight), there was no safety briefing or talk of life jackets at all.
The Danube was absolutely packed with Viking boats on river cruises - they were docked 3 abreast in some cases, where the passengers on the outer ship would walk across 2 other ships to disembark.
During a storm, I wonder if the boat captain didn’t see one of the ships docked so far out into the channel. Still, you’d think they’d have instruments.
RIP.
I am here in Hungary. The boat is reported to have sank in 7 seconds.
7 alive, 7 bodies recovered, 21 missing.
Wow, very sad. In the dark there’d be no way to see which way was up, even if they could get loose from the boat.
