Victor Ochoa is accused of trying to rob an off-duty sheriff's deputy at the Galleria at Tyler on Saturday night.
Riverside, CA An armed robber picked the wrong family to point a gun at in a mall parking lot on Saturday night when he tried to rob an off-duty deputy sheriff.
The incident occurred at about 9:45 p.m. on June 1 as the deputy and his family were walking to their car in the parking lot of the Galleria at Tyler, KNBC reported.
Riverside City Police Officer Ryan Railsback said that 25-year-old Victor Ochoa allegedly confronted the deputy and his family at gunpoint and demanded their belongings.
The deputy fired his weapon at Ochoa at least once, The Mercury News reported.
"This attempted armed robbery resulted in a deputy-involved shooting," Officer Railsback said, according to KNBC.
Multiple people who heard gunfire in the mall parking lot called the police, according to The Mercury News.
The suspect fled in a vehicle after he was shot and drove himself to a hospital where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries, KNBC reported.
An officer arrived at the hospital and determined that Ochoa was the suspect in the attempted robbery at the mall.
As soon as the suspect was cleared medically, he was taken into custody by law enforcement.
Ochoa was booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center and charged with three counts of attempted armed robbery, The Mercury News reported.
Each count also carried a sentencing enhancement for use of a firearm.
Ochoas bail amount was not immediate available, according to The Mercury News.
Police have not said what kind of weapon Ochoa was using when he committed his crimes, nor whether it had been recovered by law enforcement.
Neither the deputy nor his family members were injured in the altercation.
Police have not released the name of the deputy or where he works, The Mercury News reported.
Officer Railsback said the deputys department information was being withheld because of the investigation
He fired his weapon out of fear for his life and his familys life, Officer Railsback said. Theyre victims in this.
Police have not revealed whether the deputy used his department-issued weapon or a personally-owned firearm when he shot Ochoa.
He will be out in a year.
“These are all great stories but dont you have to be mighty quick off the draw to get a shot at someone who is pointing a gun at you?”
Not if it’s a moron Mexican! The kid probably didn’t factor in “robbing a cop,” so his “bewilderment time” gave the cop all the time he needed.
Your Tagline says otherwise....lol
Well, If this is Riverside California they will find someway to make the officer the one that caused the whole thing... Wait and see... :(
“He will be out in a year.”
Not a chance! He tried to rob a cop! They will make sure he does all nine yards. If the victim was a civilian, you might possibly have a point.
Hey, he got the sentence enhancements.
Achievement unlocked!
I'm going with your take. You are correct.
I remember that one.
You are right, he was dead before he hit the floor.
Proved the efficacy of .45 ACP.
Most of us are not allowed that means of defense.
“I had no choice but to shoot him, judge, my wife was in danger.”
“Mr Redd, our records show you aren’t married.”
“Never said I was.”
“Are you Mr John Redd, of Hawaii?”
“Yes. Honowuwu.”
He should be glad he is still alive.
The deputy needs more time on target practice
when you fly into LA and rent a car, if you don’t have a weapon they will rent you one for $50 a day on up. Must be 25 or older.
Tia Carrere: "In the grocery store."
DM: "Really! Which aisle?"
TC: "Maui." audience laughs, Ms. Carrere looks confused.
DM: "You made a joke!"
TC: "Oh..." smiles but still looks confused.
LOL
He needs more range time.
Is this the perp?
He is lucky he is still alive.
The deputy could have said his gun malfunctioned and kept firing until the “poor” perp fell down and died.
According to the article I linked it is the perp.
In related news, there’s still a mall open somewhere.
