Windows 7 die-hards (like myself) will want to peruse the ZDNet article at length (it's detailed, so I've quoted just enough above to whet your whistle). This part particularly intrigues me:
"... designed to identify issues that could prevent a Windows 7 PC from updating to Windows 10..."
Why do I get the feeling that Microsoft is preparing to FORCE-UPDATE Windows 7 machines to Windows 10?

Windows 7 Update Alert ... PING!

You can find all the Windows Ping list threads with FR search: just search on keyword "windowspinglist".

They can try to force the update to Windows 10. And if they brick my PC in the process, that will be the last MS-OS machine I ever own.

[This month’s Security-only update package for Windows 7 includes an unexpected compatibility/telemetry component that has some skeptical users up in arms.]

Don’t worry, I’m sure MS only has our best interests in mind.

Sometimes, I miss the good old days of Windows 3.1....

which is designed to identify issues that could prevent a Windows 7 PC from updating to Windows 10.

Riigghhhttt. They who so desperately want everyone on W10 spyware. The 7 users that wanted 10 have already done so, this smacks of a backdoor way to get at the holdouts like me. I would expect a crippling "feature"embedded in there to pop up some day.

No MS W7 updates for me for several years now. No security issues either. Maybe because I do not allow MS to access my machines?

Can they do that?

If they do, can we get out of it?

Die hard Win 7 user here. I have all MSFT updates turned off. My Internet access is via Wi-Fi hotspot (cellular modem) which is turned off unless I'm using the computer.

I doubt MSFT will come calling.

It looks like that. “We want to know if the computer can handle Windows 10, and if so, force it.”

This is why I shut off updates on my Win7 machine years ago.

If any of their updates in the time since were necessary for anything, I haven’t noticed.

Slightly off topic, but in regards to the MS “malicious software removal tool”...

The log file it creates indicates that a “heartbeat report” has been sent back to the mothership.

Should that be of concern?

I run ubuntu but as dual boot with win7. Once I got a look at win 8, I said screw that. Looks like it was designed for children. I have updates turned off and wifi not configured so that they can’t even connect to the internet. I do all my surfing on ubuntu.

Win 7 seems to run very smoothly this way.

Precisely why I changed to Linux Mint for all use with the exception of needing Windows to play one game I subscribe to. I bit the bullet, pulled the hard drive, bought 2 240gig SSD's installed Linux on one and Windows on the other. The linux SSD is formatted to ext4 that windows cannot even see.
