President Abraham Lincoln once said, I am not concerned that you have fallen I am concerned that you arise.
Like any large organization, the Department of Veterans Affairs has seen its share of problems.
But under President Trumps leadership, the VA is living up to Lincolns ideals by finding ways to fix those problems from past administrations.
When we realized our claim-appeals process was complex and inefficient, we worked with veterans service organizations, Congress, and the president to draft and pass a new law designed to fix it and put veterans first.
We launched a 24/7 White House VA hotline to help veterans cut through red tape and serve as an important feedback mechanism that lets agency leaders identify trends, spot problems more quickly, and drive improvements across the department.
And after Trump promised to give veterans more healthcare choices, we worked with Congress to do just that by passing the Maintaining Internal Systems and Strengthening Integrated Outside Networks, or MISSION, Act, which will consolidate our community care efforts into a single, simple-to-use program that puts veterans at the center of their healthcare decisions.

The definition of “improvement” varies depending upon what VA service is being provided and where.
I have never had to be treated medically at a VA but the one in Richmond is run fairly well.
My issue with the VA is in their claims/appeals process. I have had an appeal with the VA since 2015 that was resolved in Dec 2018. I have yet to have received a letter stating their final determination. 8 months waiting for a letter is unsat. 3+ years for a determination is unsat.
That is a shame. :( I hope the changes listed above visibly and rapidly materialize, and that the dept be held to account. Thank you for your service.
I have no real complaints about the Houston VA; I signed up for VA health when I was diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer in 2014. I was covered by my wife’s retired teacher insurance at the time, but the deductibles were pretty big.
I learned about the VA Choice program (now part of the MISSION Act) about six months later; applied for VA Choice; was told I needed to see a VA oncologist for approval; got a call three days later and told I was approved for the VA to start paying for my treatment at M.D. Anderson without having to pay for anything other than $6-11 for prescriptions; one of which costs the VA $3,600/month.
Trump said he would get better treatment options for veterans, and he has.
They have.
