Hundreds of Crabs With 'Real Big Claws' Invade Florida Town After Heavy Rain Forces [tr]
Newsweek ^ | July 16,2019 | Aristos Georgiou

Dan Skowronski, a local resident in Port St. Lucie—a city on the Atlantic coast in the south of the state—captured footage of the invasion and posted it on social media. The video shows numerous crabs crawling around his yard and home while Skowronski describes what he is seeing. "The invasion of land crabs," he says in the video. "They must have got rained out of their holes. And they're everywhere. They're more scared of me than I am of them."

You know, I’ve heard stories about the hookers at Daytona Beach and Panama City Beach, but this is ridiculous...

I’ve lived here for years. This is not new at all. In the 80’s during land crab season, you had to be very careful driving down US 1 in the evenings because there were so many on the road that you couldn’t help but squish them. Pop your tires too!

US 1 looked like it was moving. There were thousands

Although I will clarify, with as much construction over the years down here I imagine the crabs keep moving around to avoid it. Their habitats have become smaller so when something like this happens now it seems like new phenomenon

I once found a stone crab in my pool (Hobe Sound). Fished him out, boy was he angry.

I’m not sure. Love crab, but most of the ones ran over were pretty much left for the vultures! You’d have to be completely outfitted to catch them and ready to cook them right away if they were.

Now blue crabs...yummy all day long! Too bad those don’t show up in the yard!

I grew up in Hollywood, Fl (60's)...you're right...this is not new...I can remember Dania Beach Blvd being covered with land crabs...so many you couldn't avoid running over them...and a day later when the sun had baked them on the asphalt, the smell was horrendous!

When I was in Panama in the Army, I saw the same phenomenon on the causeway connecting the mainland to Flamenco Island. Thousands of them......I guess it’s an annual mating thing.
