'Top Gun' sequel, co-produced by China's Tencent, appears to remove Japanese, Taiwanese flags

Eagle-eyed viewers have spotted a curious discrepancy in the first trailer for “Top Gun: Maverick,” the sequel to the beloved ’80s classic “Top Gun,” which Paramount debuted Thursday — the patches on the iconic leather jacket worn by star Tom Cruise no longer bear the Taiwanese and Japanese flags.

One possible reason for the difference could be that “Top Gun: Maverick” is being produced, in part, by Tencent Pictures, a Chinese film distributor and production company. Tencent has co-financed films like “Wonder Woman,” “Kong: Skull Island,” “Venom” and the upcoming “Terminator: Dark Fate.”

China and Japan have long had a tumultuous relationship, and though bilateral ties have improved in recent months, the two wartime enemies continue to have grievances over historical and territorial issues.

As for self-governed and democratic Taiwan, Beijing calls the island one of its “core interests” and views the island nation as a renegade province that must be brought back into the fold — by force if necessary.

Paramount Pictures and Tencent Pictures did not immediately respond to request for comment by The Japan Times.

China has become one of the biggest film markets in the world, with many analysts suggesting that it could overtake the U.S. to become the top film market as early as this year.

Beijing wields an ever-growing amount of influence over how it is depicted in movies Americans make and watch and has pushed for the portrayal in films and other media of a friendlier, less menacing image of China.

With Hollywood these days I’m surprised that there aren’t flags for North Vietnam and ISIS.

And I will not go see that movie. Obviously a plane lover bait by Hollywood. The bootleg version will do as my right to investigate what is being proselytize to our children.

I mean, why do they do this in fear of Chinese bootleg, then why not us counter bootlegging them then

Will it be a politically correct Top Gun, that is the question?

Anybody know what the storyline is? Is Tom Cruise still a pilot all these years later? Did he become a flight instructor and now he’s training the next generation? I wonder what it’s all about.

Looks like the dates across the top are different so was a cruise jacket from another deployment, WestPac, or Med Cruise I Would think.
He definitely is past high year tenure, so unlikely to still be in the Navy but it is a movie so the degree someone is willing to let things slide will definitely affect their enjoyment of the show.

Yeah. Once you realize what is shown on the screen is only meant to represent elements of the story, viewing becomes more enjoyable.

Since the movie is funded by the Chinese, it WILL feature anti-US sentiments and comments. It must, actually.. by law.

China will not produce a film that shows any country being better than china. That’s their actual law.

That’s why I was very surprised to see what they did to
Captain America until I saw the chinese versions of the films.

I looked at the trailer just once. I may be wrong, but it seems that they may have at least one female Top Gun pilot.

Anythibg they are making to pander to the chinese market, I have less than zero interest in.

But I gave up on anything from them a long time ago, so they lost me quite awhile ago.
