Was Napoleon the greatest film never made? [Kubrick] [ed]
BBC ^ | August 15, 2019 | Nicholas Barber

The Stanley Kubrick exhibition at London’s Design Museum examines the making of every one of the extraordinary director’s films. But its opening section is devoted to a film he didn’t make: a biopic of Napoleon Bonaparte. As odd as that might seem, Kubrick fans are almost as fixated on Napoleon – to use its working title – as they are on anything else in his awe-inspiring canon. Critics regularly hail it as the greatest and most tantalising unfinished film of all. Besides, the story of how Napoleon was nearly-but-not-quite made exemplifies Kubrick’s sky-high ambition, his ravenous intellectual curiosity and his obsessive planning. “We put the display upfront because it’s a beautiful illustration of his process,” says Adrienne Groen, the co-curator of the Design Museum’s exhibition. “You can see his methods, and the amount of material he gathered before he even started.

The article mentions Audrey Hepburn was offered the role of Josephine. She played Natasha in the Hollywood version of "War and Peace". Kubrick was going to use the upwards of 20,000 Romanian soldiers as extras. This project was doomed when "Waterloo", directed by Sergei Bondarchuk, lost money at the box office. The other what if movie was Alejandro Jodorowsky's aborted "Dune" project.

Well, at least he made Barry Lyndon as a consolation, which is one of my favorite films. I also liked Waterloo.

There was a great nap film. Silent. French. Five hours. I watched 2 hours. Had dinner. Back for last three. Used split and triple screen. Sepia for battle scenes.

It’s a tough subject, and everyone is entitled to an opinion on what they imagine to be the greatest film never made. Alfred Hitchcock’s Kaleidoscope would probably get my vote.

I have watched Waterloo a dozen times, great movie, Rod Steiger as Boney, Chrisopher Plummer as Wellington - even an appearance by Orson Wells. A very factual based movie - very in line with events.

I saw it too right after it was restored sometime in the late '70s, outstanding film.

I saw it in 1982 here in Houston with the three screens and an orchestra conducted by Carmine Coppola. It's actually been restored some more since then with more found footage. I think it's almost an hour longer.
