WASHINGTON (AP) The U.S. Armys Special Operations Command on Thursday released the names of the two Green Berets who were killed a day earlier during combat operations in Afghanistan.
Master Sgt. Luis F. Deleon-Figueroa, 31, and Master Sgt. Jose J. Gonzalez, 35, died as a result of small arms fire in northern Faryab Province. Both were members of 7th Special Forces Group, which is based at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida.
It was an honor having them serve within the ranks, said Col. John W. Sannes, commander of 7th Group. They were a part of our Family, and will not be forgotten.
The deaths came as U.S. envoy Zalmay Khalilzad resumed negotiations with the Taliban aimed at ending Americas longest war. There have been eight previous rounds of negotiations over the past year, and key issues include the withdrawal of American troops, a cease-fire, intra-Afghan talks, and Taliban guarantees that Afghanistan will not once again become a launch pad for global terror attacks.
There are still about 14,000 U.S. troops in Afghanistan, and persistent attacks by both the Taliban and the Islamic State group affiliate continue to plague the country. The U.S. and NATO ended combat operations in Afghanistan in 2014, but troops remain to train and advise Afghan forces and to conduct counterterror operations against insurgents. MORE AT LINK

RIP.
Please pray our soldiers will come home soon. Pray that no more of our soldiers will die in this long conflict.
WHAT ARE WE DOING IN AFGHANISTAN, when we are NOT trying to change the tribal nature of the country;
Neither are we trying to reform the country’s customs (boy rape), nor stifle Islam, because we are told our culture is not superior to theirs;
And we cannot stop the Taliban unless we go to its source, which is in Pakistan; and we won’t go there.
So what are we doing in Afghanistan?
RIP to these fine soldiers. But I have to ask, what the hell is our plan in Afghanistan?!
The Taliban are still ROFLMAO about that one.
like others, I hope these fine American lives were not given in vain. I am conflicted about what we should do. If we can continue to screw up ISIS/Taliban/AlQueda/Muslim plans and deny them a chance to really rebuild a terrorist machine, I am willing to keep troops like these two men, on the ground there for a long time. On the other hand, if we can’t achieve that goal, come home soon and let the chips land where they may.
I know the first option is ugly. I fear the second option will cost more in the long run. I just don’t know and am afraid no one else does either.
“I just dont know and am afraid no one else does either.”
Pick the roughest, toughest tribe there (likely the Pashtuns, but the Hazari are another possibility), give their leaders billions in Swiss banks, give them tons of weapons, and let them run the country.
They will dominate the other tribes (in the traditional way) and stay loyal to the US as long as the money keeps flowing.
(As the saying is, you can’t buy an Afghan, but you an rent him.)
THEY will enforce the law against the Taliban. For as long as the money and weapons flow.
Heart breaks for the men, their family and the country. RIP
WTF are we doing there!? The last time I checked, we were actually in f-ing “Peace talks” with the Taliban which is a death sentence to any American soldiers! WTF is wrong with America since9/11 as we essentially lost the so called war on terror,everything Islam is spreading like a virus and our border is overrun?
Awful, I hate that we lose good people. Why can’t we parachute leftards into Afghanistan? RIP to both, prayers for their families.
We have a 15 billion $ base there. Not going anywhere
R.I.P. heroes.
Protecting the poppies.
All future postings should be William Kristol, Max Boot, George Will and other advocates of intervention.
For no reason! Shame on Trump.
“And we cannot stop the Taliban unless we go to its source, which is in Pakistan; and we wont go there.”
The same could be said about the Korean War, where if totally destroying the NK commies and taking over the country we would not have that problem today.
Same could be said about Vietnam. After a false peace and troop pullout, and of course cutting off aid to the South, the North Vietnamese just over ran the South. That problem could have been resolved by obliterating the north.
My understanding about Iraq is that it is now heavily influenced by Iran. Again, Saddam was no choir boy, but he did maintain a balance of power keeping Iran at bay. The destruction of Iraq strengthened Iran. Iran should have been the target of Bush’s, not Iraq or Afghanistan.
I think the answer to your question can be found deep inside the swamps world planning. Some of which has to do with keeping the military/industrial complex alive and well. Creating refugees to flood western culture could be another part.
I suspect that if we would have shown a more aggressive and firm hand in Korea, Vietnam would have unfolded a lot differently than it did. Of course, there were a lot of factors at play in Vietnam, starting with the French, long before the US became involved. I suspect Kennedy would have managed the war differently than Johnson as well, although there really is no way of knowing for sure.
