Grandfather a Detroit cop, dad was a Detroit cop so I held the same respect for LE until a couple years ago.
It was in Warren MI on a Sunday morning about 12 noon in the fall and I and a group of fellow seniors had finished playing softball at a city park when 5 of us retired to a picnic table next to the parking lot to have a beer and talk, just like they have been doing for the past 20 years (actually 4 mornings a week for 20 years) and myself, the past 12 years.
A Warren PD SUV pulled into the lot and slowly cruised by us while we waived at them, when they decided to stop. Two huge cops got out of the car and slowly strolled over to us with hands on hips.
Now keep in mind, my group of fellow thugs consisted of "Mad Dog" Marv who was 90 years old at the time, Homer "the hit man" who was about 76, Nick "the shoe man" who was 74 and myself, the young trouble maker of the group was 66.
So the big guy looks at the members of my gang who are trying to conceal their beer then focuses on me who had my bottle of Blue Moon beer on the table in front of me.
He then proceeds to tell me in his tough LEO voice that glass bottles are not allowed in the park. When he said that, I started to pour the beer out but he said "I didn't tell you to pour it out". Since I interpreted that as a demand, I stopped. I don't recall what he said after that since he allowed me to keep the unpoured beer. They turned around and left.
I think what happened was that he saw my homies reaching for their concealed guns and realized that he and his partner were outnumbered and decided to leave so that they could return home safely after their shift.
OK, so my homies aren't really dangerous as I portrayed them. But the fact remains, there are no signs in the park prohibiting beer, either in cans or bottles, and this was just an attempt by these LEO assholes to harass somebody that day..........And they chose us.
That’s a legitimate question. I’m sure there’s a lot more information in the article, but I have no interest in clicking on a link for Ebony magazine to find out.
Police must understand that if they are not clearly and unambiguously identifiable as police, We the People will RIGHTLY view them as criminal aggressors and treat them accordingly.
Our public SERVANTS need to learn some respect for their masters. Their lives, and ours, depend on it.
You're right, that's not what this site was created for. But the fact remains, that is exactly what happens time and time and time again.........Read the pertinent threads.
Totally aside from the article, which I have no intention of clicking on, either:
No uniform? Gun pointed at me? Why *SHOULDN’T* I run over you? Being threatened with one deadly weapon entitles me to defend myself with any deadly weapon I can get my hands on.
When your main tool is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.
Wrong. Every cop in the nation is trained to fire at will at cars that are trying to flee the scene of a crime. They justify this by stepping toward a fleeing vehicle thereby giving them a license to shoot. That car is a deadly weapon, so deadly force is an appropriate response.
And every court in the country backs them up when innocent people are injured. The question of whether the cop should simply move out of the way is NEVER an issue. Even if the cop is behind a car moving in the opposite direction - he is authorized to shoot, shoot and shoot some more.
If I had just committed a crime at the time, I'd put my foot on the brake and my hands on the ceiling.
It's Oklahoma, for Pete's sake, not Chicago.
If they aren’t UNIFORMED why should they be given the deference due police?
If they want the respect WEAR THE UNIFORM!
And if you hadn't?
No uniforms, no marked cars. Is it cops, or is it robbers?
You've got 500 milliseconds to decide.
Use them wisely.
POST OF THE THREAD!!!!
Or, how about treating the officers to the same criminal standard any ordinary citizen would be? Imagine the legal hell you would be in should you be legally carrying and decide the driver of a vehicle you are trying to speak to is a threat to your life and you start pumping the vehicle full of bullets hitting 3 of his four kids inside? Race should have absolutely nothing to do with this, either way.
You would be arrested and prosecuted, as should these officers.
Also, officers in plain clothes should NOT be allowed to detain anyone ever. They should always be accompanied by uniformed officers. Plain clothes should be reserved for investigations and undercover work, detaining or accosting people for anything while in plain clothes is asking for trouble. I can’t see myself stopping for someone in plain clothes, too likely I’m about to be carjacked. And if they are threatening with guns drawn, why wouldn’t I be able to use my car to defend myself?
No, he did not. The robbery occurred the week before.......
Too bad. I seriously doubt that the policy you have outlined has actually been shown to reduce deaths.
Face it. Police are there to enforce laws for the government. The public’s safety is an afterthought.
And don’t tell me that the government cares much about public safety. They might say so, but they are only interested in control and staying in power.
You might want to practice what you preach:
1. The detectives did not have a coat and tie on.
2. The detectives were in plain clothers.
3. The detectives were driving an unmarked police car.
Here's more facts from a more reliable source"
the detectives involved in the shooting were in plain clothes and were driving an unmarked vehicle.
Look Ken, I understand that, but look what happened.
It proves my point. Nobody is going to stand there with a gun in their hand with a car baring down on them and not shoot.
With headlights on, good luck looking in the vehicle to see if there are kids there.
Every person with a gun in their hand is going to defend themselves by shooting at the driver.
Chances are, if they are trying to steal the car or other things, they may let the people in the car go.
One way you have 100% of the people shooting. The other you may have no shots fired.
Odds seem better by stopping.
Anyway, thanks for the response.
“I don’t know. Did you?”
Well, you are posing the scenario, you should be able to tell me. It’s pretty relevant information for someone to know before they decide how they respond to armed men approaching their vehicle.
NOBODY has any business pointing a gun at me.
NOBODY.
The same is true of the overwhelmingly vast majority of Americans.
Some dudes in plain clothes, getting out of a plain car, and pointing guns at me, look like a robbers.
A sane person will treat these people who look like robbers AS robbers. A sane person will defend himself from armed robbers using whatever methods are necessary.
If the cops don't want to be treated as robbers, they had best quit LOOKING like robbers.
If you're a cop, take this to heart. Act accordingly.
“A sane person will treat these people who look like robbers AS robbers.”
No, a sane person who hasn’t committed a felony and doesn’t have reason to believe the police will be trying to arrest them probably looks at them that way. A criminal who knows damn well the police may have a warrant out for their arrest is probably going to to look at them completely differently.
And I assure you they were wearing a badge on their belt. Please Dont judge until you know all the facts.
Makes assumption. Tells others to wait for facts.
That's a sign of a dangerous personality.
I searched the net for this, and they is VERY little to go on.
