The system mimics the behavior of vertebrates, whose balance control comes largely from oscillating neurons in the spinal cord, using a combination of encoder sensors (to read relative positions for joints) and inertial measurement units (to measure the body's orientation relative to the ground). The result is a mechanical canine that can walk, run and trot with more grace and speed than usual.
Cameras and LiDAR are also present to help robots avoid collisions. This doesn't require dramatic changes to the bots themselves, at least. The test units are Ghost Robotics designs augmented with sensors to test the new algorithms.

And remember, we evolved by *chance*; but the finest minds at MIT have to mimic nature to come up with optimal strategies.

This is all fine engineering, but how long can it run on a cup of dog food?

“Metalhead” episode on Black Mirror is a horrifying vision of robot dogs.

Yeah, instead of following the sled teams with bags of kibble, they’d have to haul around a parts bench and tool crib.......sponsored by AAA.

I would totally ride through town with that blasting on my bike.

After 20 years of doing tech support, you’d be surprised how many people have a hard time handling that. LOL
To: Viking2002
Yeah, I would be surprised.
It’s the first step, really.
[well, after you check to see if it’s even plugged in]
