Repairing the engine, replacing the oil cooler, intercooler and rear shock absorber plus other minor miscellanea came out to an astronomical sum. The only official Land Rover dealer in all of Mongolia, a company by the name of Wagner, charged me five times the cost of the tools needed to assemble the engine. This was no mistake: the owner of a Land Rover vehicle is expected to not only pay but to significantly overpay for things he doesn’t even need. They just forget to mention that in the ads.... Mainly amazed at the stupidity of driving a high performance SUV with literally no support through a barren wilderness.
If you do that, drive an old school Land Rover Defender with the four cylinder diesel that can run in cooking oil and be fixed by anyone with a modicum of mechanical ability even if they never saw it before. I have one rubbing inthe Negev that is from the early 1980 that was left by either the Syrians or the Eqyptians as they ran away. Had bullet holes in the fuel tank. I don’t think I’ve ever done anything to it but put oil and fuel.

The main thing is what for is that Range Rover intended? With all its offroad bells and whistles, but uncapable of an off-road ride far from civilised places?
90% of automobiles in rural Mongolia are UAZ or Toyota LC. Any LR is exotics.
Range Rover: voted most likely to return home on the back of a tow truck.

There’s a big difference between off-roading in a country where help is only 100 miles away and where pathetic help is 1000 miles away.
I’ve heard that joke a lot. I think it had to do with the morsels imported into the USA, in particular the old Discovery with the tiny 8 cylinder petrol.
Aside from the ancient D90 I have that is still going, I’ve have a Range Rover supercharged that has been amazing since 2014 that had been solid for 120,000 miles.
RR is a boulevard cruiser. It looks like an off-roader because SUVs are popular. Its loved for ride comfort not for reliability or off-road capabilities.
Generally true. If you don’t abuse it serves well. I wouldn’t take it for off roading though.
Most people disappointed got them used and in poor condition.
I think the new Defender will be pretty solid for real off road.
But I agree the other models are really for confidence on a snowy ski road that a true off road beast.
LOL! Why on earth would anyone go any further than around the block in a late model Land Rover/Range Rover!?! Some years ago, I inherited one. It had less than 40k miles on it and had never been off the pavement, and it was a mechanical disaster! I repaired everything that was wrong with it and forbid anyone to drive it until I sold it. And, the guy who bought it thought they were the greatest thing since toilet paper and couldn’t wait to hand me an envelope full of cash for it. And, believe me, I couldn’t wait to hand over the keys.
As a retired tech, I’ve had the experience of working on one or two of these overrated things. I couldn’t seriously recommend one although they may have some good features. They are way too expensive to buy & to operate unless they are within warranty. Even then, I wouldn’t own one.
This is of subject, but how many people know that a loaded 10 year-old Honda Accord with 100k miles brings more money than a mid-range Mercedes Benz with 100k miles?
There are a number of repair shops that only repair Mercedes. There aren’t any that only repair Hondas. There is a reason.
Range Rover is a trophy car, status symbol.
Why not a Porsche then? More fun on a paved road, same money and you won’t go off-road on a RR anyway.
