Eddie Van Halen Reportedly Undergoing Throat Cancer Treatment In Germany

Eddie Van Halen has secretly been flying to Germany to receive treatments for throat cancer, TMZ learned Sunday (October 13).

According to the celebrity gossip outlet, the Van Halen legend has been quietly jetting overseas over the past five years to undergo radiation treatment for the disease. As fans know, Van Halen was first diagnosed with cancer of the tongue in 2000. Following an operation to have nearly a third of his tongue removed, he was declared cancer-free in 2002.

Insiders with direct knowledge told TMZ, "some of the cancer cells migrated down to his throat," which required doctors to "scrape them out."

An ongoing theory of how Van Halen developed tongue cancer has had to do with a metal guitar pick he used over 20 years ago. In a 2015 interview with Billboard, the guitarist speculated the pick — which he’d been known to keep in his mouth — was the cause of the disease.

“I used metal picks – they’re brass and copper – which I always held in my mouth, in the exact place where I got the tongue cancer,” the "Jump" star told the outlet at the time. “Plus, I basically live in a recording studio that’s filled with electromagnetic energy. So that’s one theory. I mean, I was smoking and doing a lot of drugs and a lot of everything. But at the same time, my lungs are totally clear. This is just my own theory, but the doctors say it’s possible.”

As yet, sources told outlet the operations are helping to keep the disease under control. Others close to the rocker also indicated he’s “doing okay.”

Maybe it’s because the US is usually LAST of the LAST to approve new meds or treatments.

I don't know much about this world but the one thing that I have a pretty strong understanding of,thanks to a 30 year career at several of the world's most famous hospitals,is the world of medicine.

As a result I know that the Dana Farber Cancer Center in Boston,Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in NYC and MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston are,in fact, the three finest cancer treatment (and research) centers in the world.

For every foolish showbiz type that goes to Germany for treatment hundreds of Germans,Brits,Canadians,Saudis,Swedes, etc fly to those three cities for care.

Thanks. I do now understand what you mean.

But, 1978 is 40 years ago.

IMO he doesn’t hold a candle to Stevie Ray Vaughn or Prince for guitar playing.

Yes, 1978 was 41 years ago, but I defy you to listen to any rock guitarist under 35 years of age today and not hear the influence of Eddie.

SRV and Prince are disciples of Jimi, not Eddie. They each brought something to the dance, though Prince's songwriting skills are superior to his guitar chops IMHO. Both died too young - SRV died in a tragic accident, and Prince died just being tragic.

Van Halen just spewed random spasmodic notes. Horrible.

That’s why they had to do a Kinks song to have something halfway decent.

Netherlands, actually. His dad was apparently a musician of some notoriety in Holland, he and his brother Alex were born in Amsterdam, and the family came to America on a cruise ship when they were just a few years old. I remember reading that he said they got here with $50 cash and a piano. He’s a naturalized American, but he said when he got here, he didn’t speak a word of English, and he used to hang out with all the black kids on the playground because they were the only ones who would stand up for him when the schoolyard bullies tried to hassle him for being foreign and speaking weird. Cool. Different time.

My FRiend, you have good taste in music, but you're dead wrong on your analysis of Eddie.

Frankly, You Really Got Me is one of the weaker songs on their debut album. On that point, here is the isolated guitar track on "I'm The One." What you hear is just a guy and his guitar tearing it up and mixing fast runs, attitude, boogie, technique, and keeping in time - with no punch-ins, no edits...in 1978.

I saw SRV live in 1986. Testify remains my favorite of his instrumentals. I prefer his playing to that of Prince's, but Prince's songwriting was superior to possibly SRV and EVH's combined.

What about Fred Hutchinson in Seattle?

...and the aforementioned Mayo and Hopkins? (Penn, Duke?)

The three I mentioned are certainly not the only excellent centers in the country...but they are the best. You'd surely get outstanding care at Hopkins and Mayo Clinic...but I'm less familiar with Fred Hutchinson.

As your post suggests this country enjoys...in many, many cities from coast to coast...the finest healthcare in the world.

That is a perfect example of how I described it. Random spasmodic flailing.

Rush was worse.

Van Hale, I never liked at all.

Too much deedle-a-deedle-a-deedle-a on guitar.

(It’s dangerous to talk pop music because people take it personally - so don’t take it as a personal affront or anything).

It’s not. Any exchange of bacteria is a risk. Shaking hands, touching doorknobs, kissing (even grandma). What one does is just keep oneself healthy with a good body bacterial biome. Gut bugs we call them but they don’t remain only in the gut. Eating both probiotics and prEbiotics and getting a great ecosystem is paramount.

If yours is great, you can kiss anyone anywhere, but the risk is greater if you’re kissing EVERYONE EVERYWHERE.

Lots of people will be ill (even with a virus) and not realize their immune system is too indisposed for a romp with a new sex partner. No one stops and says “you know, I’m getting over a cold.” Or if they do, they think it’s their partner who is at risk for getting that sniffly nose. It’s you, at risk getting some of their bacteria to maybe throw off your good mix. And maybe getting something worse than the sniffles eventually.

80% of sexually active adults get the virus....

My sons all got the vaccine(s)

Most adult X and Boomer moms I know test + for it and I’d guess me and the rib are odds on to have had it at some point

I hate to see this used as an excuse for men to refrain from oral sex for ladies like it was when I was young and most men didn’t do it...and trust me it was that way and some demographics still don’t do it....
West Indian men for example

Properly done it’s the key to a ladies satisfaction especially one who has a difficult time enjoying coitus

A good man should for sure have a mastery of this in his quiver of talent and have an enthusiastic attitude about since so many women at least in my era were sensitive about how things were down yonder

It’s a key to monogamy I think....

So yes I defend the institution

Michael Douglas notwithstanding

I replied

Obviously I’m an enthusiast lol

I learned very early in this one

Older women were like oh my God where did u learn that

I was like ...literature

Seriously

I was a boy and read a book that gave pretty good detail

And my mom was a big reader and had everything from Alan Watts to john Updike

And

* Every thing you ever wanted to know about sex but we’re afraid to ask

I absorbed it all early teens

Of course I had a lot of religious shame over it too
