Tinfoil-hat search engine DuckDuckGo gifts more options, dark theme and other toys for the 0.43%

Includes setting to turn ads off – stop hissing at the back, Google

Alternative search engine DuckDuckGo has announced improvements to its search options and an enhanced dark theme, but its tiny market share shows that most people are content to stick with Google, despite privacy issues.

DuckDuckGo says it offers search without any user profiling, in contrast to the trend towards personalisation and targeted advertising favoured by its competitors. Founder Gabriel Weinberg says that profiling and tracking is unnecessary since simply presenting ads based on the keywords you type is sufficient for a business model. "If you type in 'dishwasher', you will get a dishwasher ad," he said.

The search engine draws from a variety of sources, including its own DuckDuckBot crawler and answer indexes, but also has a partnership with Yahoo! and Microsoft Bing for its search results. Its advertising is primarily syndicated from Bing Ads. New features include an improved date filter that lets you restrict results to the past year, where previously one month was the maximum time.

Emphasis added. Title is sarcastic of course. Duck Duck Go is my default search engine.

How they make money without snooping.

Side question: I’m setting up a computer for an older relative of mine. I’m looking for a bare-bones search engine for her. Nothing confusing or intricate. Any suggestions? Thanks.

They’re not that good at looking up porn...

Er, I wouldn’t know!!! A friend told me!!

Seriously, I like them. They’re ok for shopping for things.

Problem is paid projects I do online require google or firefox.

Other than that, duckduckgo fits the bill.

I have a windows phone, that will need replacement in a year or two. Hoping to find a non-android phone. Might go with an apple phone and use the hotspot with my tablet.

My tablet has firefox with VPN, WebRTC, and Canvas Defender and other anti-tracking software.

start page is more “tin foil” but the results aren’t as good. I love duckduckgo but for some reason ubuntu/firefox with duckduckgo doesn’t work. The search results page has the duckduckgo logo but is a blank white page from there down. I fire up Brave browser just to use DDG.

I can go to duckduckgo.com in ubuntu/firefox and it works but doesn’t have the extras like images | videos and the wikipedia blurb which I like for things that don’t have to do with politics, culture or climate. But DDG set as default search engine is broken.

I don’t really like chrome based browsers which Brave and most alternative browsers are. Being on linux, I can use chromium browser which is what chrome is based on but I simply don’t like it, even pre-google.

My default too, for around 2 years now. The James Damore incident made me de-Google my life somewhat.

Speaking of which, a resource:

DuckDuckGo has gotten much better over the years, but there’s still a few things Google does better. I use DuckDuckGo’s browser extension when going to Google, though, so they can’t leave little tracking turds behind on my system when I’m finished.

IDK. Set up the Bookmarks bar real good. Add a folder called Quick Links to it for more links so you don't get the ">" on the right side, pointing to more links (the folder is a drop-down). Show her how to use tabs.

That is all. Oh, and include a link to FR!

They make their money by suggesting things for sale in the first item that comes up

First off, the stupid name is a big turn off. Second, the results are too limited. I periodically visit and find my own companies are not in their search results even though they are top in Google (without paid advertising). Other issues, but those two kick it off.

I am cutting ties with Google.

I switched from Chrome browser to “Brave”. I switched my default search engine to “Bing”. I also use Startpage and Yippy.

I find that I use Google less and less. In fact, rarely.

“F” GOOGLE!

I know enough and read enough to discount any value in the anti-tracking and all that any site does. It happens whether you want it or not. Heck, when you do background on a gun, the report is not supposed to be kept or indexed but guess what, they can find you in minutes. Only privacy used to be to no carry a phone and stay off the internet. Now, unless you where a mask, you can be tracked anywhere. And a mask is not enough as many programs can now identify you by how you walk, etc.

We need to reset and reapproach what we mean and expect of privacy, whether online or in-person.

DDG is a fine search engine. I have used it for several years now. Occasionally, when I do not get good results, I will decloak and use google. And when I do that, more often than not they are no better.

DDG’s small market share reflects the percentage of people who understand how this stuff works and and take it seriously. IMHO it is just a matter of time before the PC mob decides that Duck Duck Go has to go and starts attacking their advertisers, partners, payment processors, etc.

StartPage.com.

It has worked well for me. Very uncomplicated and very private.

Tinfoil-Hat? really.

~~~
TBH, it is... kinda. But it’s still a mis-characterization.
I am one of the .43% that uses duckduckgo, but I don’t think I ever search for anything that should raise any kind of flags. I do it more on principle, because of how google collects data on people, and the aggregation of personal information that the big tech companies participate in. It’s not so much about what we are doing, but about what they are doing that is the problem. So in that regard, it’s not tin-foil hat at all.
But to some people, privacy even for the principle of it, is tin-foil hat land.
