Nielson Ratings
Nielsen Ratings ^ | 11/8/19 | Dacula

For the past few months, I have been given several surveys to complete by the Nielsen rating company. So far, I have received about $30 in crisp cash.

Now they want me to be a 'metered' participant. I and each member of my household simply wear a 'pager' type meter during the day and we get $10 per person to try it and $15 person to wear a month. At the end of 90 days, each participant receives $50. Each week there is a $500 sweepstakes.

Nielson is legit and they’re willing to pay a little cash for their statistics.

I have no problem with that.

Do it legit or not at all.

I agree. Be honest. Our family (parents + kids) did it for a whole year. Was about 3 years ago from what I remember.

My parents participated in this.

They naively thought that through their participation they could help to arrest the slide of television into that great cultural sewer.

But to their dismay it only continued to get worse, so they gave up.

How ignorant you are. Nielsen is sharp. They will know right away you are jerking them and will have you send back your devices. Good since I don’t want dogs influencing what I watch.

They did help...it would have been worse without their participation.

I figured that I would slant results to our side and promote local radio stations. I do a weekly 10-minute segment on a local radio station every other week or so.

We did it for a couple of years. I think right around the NFL kneeling issue and We stopped watching football. The meter also picks up what radio stations you listen too. Given how I surf when driving that could have been amusing.

No, the devices "hear" what you watch 24/7, although, they need to be recharged. So, yes that includes the news, but every other show on TV whether it is cable or broadcast, not to mention radio, too.

So, if advertisers don't want to advertise on TV shows that my 86 year old dad watches, then it gets canceled.

It's not just news shows. By the way, the news divisions on all three networks lose money. It is a public service (ironic, isn't it).

Why make a mockery of the process?

I used to work for Arbitron. The process is a mockery and has been for decades.

Let him have fun and squeeze some money out of them in the bargain. Some one should get something out of it.

I spend over $50 a month on food and bones for my dogs.

Why make a mockery of the process?

Seems fair that they should work for their bones. :)

BTW when I say the system is a mockery I mean that those numbers are squeezed, sauced, manipulated, turned inside out and forced to do tricks until they say what the customer wants.

Occasionally there is a program that is such a monster that they can not do much with it but they will still try.

I have two large dogs that are spoiled and require organic free-range bones. I go through 5 lbs. a month then treats and food. They are expensive.

It seems fair that they should work for their bones. :)

Eh. We did it for four years. Money came in handy and I don’t give a damn who know what I watch on TV. What? “Matlock” fans are gonna kick my butt cuz I turn the TV off after “Perry Mason”?

But you wear the meters all the time so they can pick up the signals from media programs you might not realize you’re being exposed to. Now THAT scares the crap of me. Not that I care they know what those signals are, but the fact that we’re being exposed to stuff that is so hard to detect and that we don’t know about... And I just watched “Banshee Chapter”.

Thank you Lee!

It is a lot of fun working with my son. I thought I knew a lot about computers and technology. He is way past me and I just sit back and remember the days of teaching him about computers.

I used to manage a global IT Help Desk and the company was bought out and was getting rid of their old systems. We ended up with over 100 systems. I told him to have fun and that there was nothing he could do to hurt anything.

He would take it apart piece by piece and I would teach him the importance of that part.

He is a good kid with a kind heart and will be very successful, thanks to what his mom put in place.

I’d do it just so they’d piss their money away. I don’t watch their crap on TV anyway. Of course, I’m sure they fudge the numbers anyway as to satisfy the highest bidder.

It has been a few years. I just ignored them and kept the cash. Sounds like they have upped the offers. I may have received $10-15 during their spam attempt..

I get cash in the mail$ Heck ya, I am going to take advantage of them and skew the results to the right. My dogs are Conservative, except when it comes to bones. They do have their bone deposit bank in hidden places in case of an emergency and I am not at home.

Free money and promote conservative values. I am going Gonzo!

How that pager works is it receives an inaudible encoded signal from the TV or radio broadcast that indicates what program is being listened to or watched.

I did that years ago and spoke to my friends wife who was a producer for radio. The only interesting take-way was if you live in an area with overlap from different stations, your results count a ton more if you watch or listen to the station in the bigger media market. For example, at that time I lived in Monterey, CA. I could pick up Rush Limbaugh from San Francisco, Watsonville, CA (Santa Cruz) or Salinas. I made sure to listen to Rush on KSFO from San Francisco so it would count more.

That system inadvertently caused the demise of the Smooth Jazz radio format...even though the stations were still making good bank. Somehow the encoded signal was lost in the music, or something.
