Wave a flag for original movies at the box office, as Disneys release of 20th Century Fox/Chernin Entertainments Ford v. Ferrari is racing to a $30M win after a $11M Friday (including $2.1M Thursday previews). That buried Sonys franchise reboot of Elizabeth Bankss Charlies Angels, which dropped well below $12M-$14M expectations with a $8.2M debut in 3rd place.
James Mangolds Ford v. Ferrari gets an A+ CinemaScore, and 4 1/2 stars and a 68% definite recommend on PostTrak. With a boost like that, its a great blast off for FvF in a fierce awards season and Thanksgiving holiday, which is about to get swallowed up by Disneys Frozen 2 with a $100M-$120m opening next weekend. Lionsgates Midway is also beating Charlies Angels in second place with a second weekend take of $8.8M, -51% for a 10-day of $35.1M.
If you can do this, FvF is old-school Hollywood. I saw it last night and was pleasantly entertained. It's a man's movie the way they used to make 'em.
No "wokeness". No SJW nonsense. No token pandering. Just real men being real men driving really fast cars in the mid 1960s. Real men who love their sons and are married to loyal wives who support them (hats off to Outlander 's Caitriona Balfe for her portrayal of Ken Miles' strong but supportive wife Mollie).
And to the surprise of no one here, FvF looks to be doing pretty well this opening weekend at the box office.
FORD v FERRARI | Official Trailer 2 [HD] | 20th Century FOX
And again to the surprise of no one here, another old-school man's movie, Midway remains strong in second place.
And finally, to the surprise of no one here, uber-woke Charlies Angels is bombing, as discussed in this thread:
How Charlies Angels Fell From Grace At The Box Office With An $8M+ Opening
Will Hollywood get the message?
They might if movie-goers tell them with their wallets.
I agree. I also saw it, last night. When was the last time we saw friendship, loyalty, honesty displayed in a movie, without sneering condemnation as a counterpoint?
It's almost as if friendship, loyalty, honesty were GOOD things...
A reboot of Charlie's Angels... who thought that was a good idea?
I heard that they made Charlie’s Angels politically correct.
I am surprised that Hollywood apparently would rather make a political statement, than make a movie which people will want to see.
I really want to see this flick. But it rankles me... Matt Damon as Carroll Shelby, who was a true American original. I guess I'll swallow my misgivings and stomach Matt Damon...
Those who keep an eye on film festivals and release schedules could see the weather buoys bobbing months ago. Still, it was a jolt to spot that Ford v Ferrari billboard on Lincoln Blvd. the other day, with its tanned, taut images of Matt Damon and Christian Bale, jaws set, dark glasses in place, staring down from a place that not so long ago was inhabited by Brie Larson and her Unicorn Store.
That's the problem when you listen to a small but very vocal contingent of angry SJWs on Twitter.
Best review of C.A. that I saw: “Woketard Manhatefest”.
Anyone who mentioned ‘Kristen Stewart’ and ‘Charlie’s Angels’ in the same sentence should have been shot......
I’m headed off in a half an hour to see it!
Im going to see FvF, because my dream car is a GT. Since they stopped selling GTs, I guess it will be a dream.
Just saw it, good movie and V8 sound porn.
I can’t stand Matt Damon but I will be seeing this movie.
I saw it last night.
It was fantastic and mostly historically accurate.
Ken Miles wife (Caitriona Balfe) probably deserves an academy award nomination.
Make Charlies Angels Men , Real Men ,LOl
Snort. But they give Balfe a pass cuz she's woke.
The original television series was a bad T&A show with terrible writing to back the jiggling.
I think that a case could be made that Charlie’s Angles was a predecessor of Twerking.
Glad it bombed.
The remake of Charlie’s Angels with Drew Barrymore was bad...now another reboot?
Charlies Angels 2019 review. Woketards. love it.
In the aftn for me, but I am not crazy, Caitriona stole the show, the station wagon driving scene, her emotions in other scenes stole me away from the V8/Shelby overdose of which goes back to having a GT350 matchbox as a kid, that is saying something. I'll opine more later, but this is a must see in a high tech movie house w/ the small block & FE's vibrating through your every pore via the sound systems...
