A wreck on Route 1 north Friday night left three young women dead.
The crash occurred just before midnight near the Ford Avenue intersection in Woodbridge, according to Woodbridge Police Sgt. Philip Agosta.
Brianna Martinez, 23, was driving a 2012 Nissan Altima that rear-ended a tractor-trailer which had been stopped at the intersection.
Michaela Powell, 23, and Uchechukwu Chukwuma, 24, were passengers in the Nissan. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
Martinez was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, where she was pronounced dead. All three of the victims were from the Somerset section of Franklin Township, Sgt. Agosta said. All of the victims were also 2014 graduates of Franklin High School, Dana Karas, the director of counseling for Franklin Township Public Schools, told NJ Advance Media.
Chukwuma graduated from Syracuse University in 2018, university spokeswoman Sarah Scalese told NJ Advance Media.

RIP
A parents worse nightmare.
“the front-seat passengers were probably decapitated”
Well the driver died at the hospital so I’m going to take a wild guess that she had her head on her shoulders when transported.
Ran into a tractor trailer that had been stopped. Distracted driving? RIP
Two years ago this month there was a head on collision, dead center of the highway.
Two young mothers and a child each were killed.
The investigating LE determined that both young mothers were texting at the time of the crash.
What ethnic name is that?
“Uchechukwu Chukwuma”
Id guess Nigerian.
Doubt any of them had eyes on the road. Buried in smartphones and wasted.
Wookie
lol
You’re going out on a limb :)
The fines on truckers and their company is astronomical, and is a career ender: that is why few truckers risk it.
Most of the fatalities I've seen have been rear-ending tractor trailers. We know it because the first responders are not treating anyone, and the car is covered with tarps until the coroner arrives.
So sad. Must of hit awfully hard since one of them must've been in the back seat and the airbag didn't save the other one.
Just before midnight drugs, alcohol, texting, drowsiness, excessive speeding, distractions inside the vehicle? Probably betting its one of those or a combination.
Nigerian.
I see it every single time I am driving, every day.
Suv and up high enough to see well, its why i have an suv.
I see women of every age, moms and daughters at the same time, but women of every age buried in a phone. For guys, I see only mostly young guys on phones right in their faces.
The women really do not give a crap, if its not makeup or digging for something somewhere in the car, its a phone in their face typing away.
I say texting, 3 girls, I bet they were awake and talking, not sleeping, but it’s too late to set them straight. I’m sure their parents and the schools told them and all students and youths, ad nauseum, not to drink and drive, to pay attention and not to use the cell phone.
Just a couple of months ago, in Toms River, NJ, a parent bought his recent college graduate son a Porsche, and it wound up flying into the 2nd story in an office bldg. both died.
Kids think they are invincible.
Reminds me of what happened to Jayne Mansfield in South Louisiana in 67. That event made tractor trailers install what they would call ‘Mansfield Bars’ on the back of the trailers to prevent cars from running up underneath it.
There’s a hospital much closer to that intersection than RWJ, like 5 minutes or less. New Brunswick is 15 minutes even for an ambulance. Why did they take her so far? RWJ isn’t even the next closest.
