re. my wife spent half a day in the driver’s seat with the manual figuring out how to operate the car.

LOL. I rent a car when flying into Boston to visit family, and every vehicle's controls are different. Finally learned to figure out how to adjust the mirrors, use the radio, etc. before leaving the airport. Driving through the Ted Williams tunnel or in the traffic on the Mass Pike is not a good time to realize you have blind spots all over.

When we rent my wife drives the car. My vehicle is a Ford F-250 1972 truck. I don't do my own maintenance, but I can look under the hood and understand what is there.

Next year my ship's reunion is in Branson MO, which has no airport. Thanks for the advice and I will check out operating the gadgets before I leave.

One other thing. When I sit on the step of our garage, the Toyota will often chirp at me. Yesterday the back door went up. Sometimes when I am walking through a parking lot, Toyotas will chirp at me. That probably means their doors are unlocking. Doesn’t give you a whole lot of confidence in the technology.

This and similar designs are/were made for kids like our grandson, a wizard with tech and has his own air drone, model car drone and water/boat drone. None are operated with any wheels.

In my Navy experience, automated and computerized systems were consistently problematic. I trusted hydraulics and servos to do the job, but nothing more sophisticated. I expect equipment in a ship to get wet, with salt water, and modern technology is not compatible with the reliability required for critical systems in that environment.

You think like an Army tank crewman. That's a good thing, especially in combat, though it does not particularly advance equipmenr state-of-the-art.
