I was with the 82nd Airborne at Ft. Bragg in the mid/late 1970s and recall the incident that occurred around ‘77 or ‘78. I believe that the rigger/perp was in fact finally caught.
Was that rigger finally prosecuted in 1981/82? I was in Korea from Nov 80-Nov 84 and didn’t get back to the 82d until Apr 87, after a stint as SGS NCOIC for LtGen Lindsey, Cdr XVIII ABC (Lindsey was my Battalion Cdr in the 1/508 from 74-75 or so).
