“If they wanted to make the claim the left and Dems are wrongly trying to blame Trump, I get that and agree completely. But sheesh - Trump hurt himself with his early comments which actually contradicted his actions.”

I agree - and a Deep State setup would have been VERY RISKY for them, as all Trump would have had to do was respond like Singapore, Hong Kong, and Taiwan and he’s be a national hero, to EVERYONE. In fact, the President of Taiwan’s approval ratings are through the roof there...as she found someone medically qualified to lead the fight against the virus and then got out of the way.

Trump, instead, seemed to go to his financial advisers who convinced him that once you calm the mass panic, all will be fine. Trump tried that...didn’t work

Only a handful of states have zero confirmed cases: Idaho, Montana, West Virginia and Alabama. All others have from 1 to 457 cases.

Washington State (457), New York (325), California (198) and Massachusetts (108) have over 100 cases.

I see both sides of this. I understand the concern as this could be worse than H1N1 and acting now could save 20,000 lives, maybe more. On the other hand, it does seem a little over the top and/or premature.

Trump's in a tough spot. Very little news with H1N1 but the MSM will(probably already are) list all the deaths every day. I wouldn't put it past blue States or Counties to call every case of flu, coronavirus. Look who's canceled things, Sports, entertainment, tech and coastal States. Left, Left, Left and Left. It's a shitty situation.

SWITZERLAND

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Switzerland tops 1,000 as of Friday. There have been ten deaths. The government imposed sweeping measures on Friday, including closing schools across the country, banning public gatherings of more than 100 people, and pledging CHF10 billion to help the economy.

Which is why Matt and a few others keep talking about the "doubling rate".

Starting with patient -0-, without significant controls (aka "social distancing"), total infected can reach approx 16k in 14 days. However, given just another 2 weeks in a same lax environment, the gross total can hit almost 270 million. (And of course, the next day - day 29 - it doubles again to 540 million and so on ...)

You can play with the numbers yourself. I'm convinced someone demonstrated this model (or similar) to Trump: https://www.calculator.net/exponent-calculator.html?base=2&exponent=14&fresult=&x=48&y=21

Now, as a caveat, while this math equation also holds true for the flu, common cold, etc, the big difference is heritable resistance and susceptibility. That is, even though 200m Americans may have a cold/flu, it doesn't collapse the medical care infrastructure. We just drink a bunch of OJ, pop some benadryl and muddle through.

However, the pathology characteristics of covid-19 are quite different. With the same number infected, but with some % requiring add'l medical care, the entire system can be collapsed. Which is why Trump made his address Wed, and in about 15 minutes is supposed to declare a national emergency.

Check out this stat from Worldometers:

CLOSED CASES -

Cases which had an outcome:
70,920 (93%) Recovered / Discharged

5,394 (7%) Deaths

That 7% rate has remained steady as the overall global numbers grow.

Dr Acton: Huge preparedness behind the scenes. Decrease the logarithmic spread is the goal.

“Thoughts with those in Italy, where 250 people have died in the last day.”

Just for the flubros: At most, an average of 100 Americans per day die of the flu.

Scaling that to Italy, that would be about 20 Italians per day die of the flu (at most).

250 Italians died yesterday due to Coronavirus.

Look at what every other country is doing that has over 1000 cases, we are not overreacting any more than every other country. Even Switzerland shut everything down today.

Personally I doubt a lot of those flu death numbers. I think there is massive medical facility infection; over-prescription of multiple, conflicting drugs; plain old malpractice and institutional neglect; and death of unknown cause among the elderly that go into those flu totals.

Quick question to Massachusetts FReepers: Did I hear Gov. Baker is keeping all MA restaurants OPEN during this "crisis"?

If I heard correctly (via radio), our idiotic Connecticut governor Red Ned Lamont is *closing* all CT restaurants "until further notice" because of Coronavirus.

If that's true, we will spend our $$ in MA restaurants. Fortunately we live near the MA border.

They just give a very wide range for flu deaths. I have not trusted them on that matter for years. I often get the annual flu shot, though never see a difference either way when I don’t.
