NEW YORK -- Ticket sales plunged to their lowest levels in at least 20 years at North American movie theaters as the coronavirus pandemic led to one of Hollywood's worst weekends at the box office.
Receipts totaled about $55.3 million in U.S. and Canada theaters, according to studio estimates Sunday. Not since 2000 has weekend box office revenue been so low, according to data firm Comscore, when $54.5 million in tickets were sold on a quiet September weekend. More people went to the movies the weekend after Sept. 11, 2001.
Disney's latest release from Pixar, Onward, remained the top film, earning $10.5 million in its second weekend. The Christian romance I Still Believe from Lionsgate brought in $9.5 million. Sony's comic-book adaptation Bloodshot, with Vin Diesel, grossed an estimated $9.3 million in its debut. The Blumhouse horror satire The Hunt opened with $5.3 million.

Good! “The Hunt” came out this weekend.
No tears shed on this side!!
A combo of disease and bad acting.
Back to TCM.
My local theaters are limiting ticket sales to only half the seats, giving the audience more space between seats. Doesn’t seem to be working.I haven’t been to the movies in months, finally had enough of the megastars’ Trump-bashing tirades.
I suspect they’ll just start putting movies direct to streaming instead of theaters.
Ditto.
Gypsy was just on. Good movie.
My wife and I went to see the GOOD LIAR several weeks ago. That was the first movie that we went to see in the theater in a number of years. Won’t be doing that again in the foreseeable future.
Hollywood needs to stop making CRAP.
May H-wood’s income to go zero.
See ..there is always a bright side to every situation.
No, people need to stop buying crap.
Imagine that! They have told us we are going to die if we go to the movies or near another human being & they are surprised box office sales are down??
WOW ABC is right on top of THE OBVIOUS as usual
If the virus destroys Hollywood the disease might be worth it.
Good. Makes it easier to enforce my six foot zone when I go see Death Blow or the latest Meryl Streep flick.
That’s so clever.
That way we can swtitch from not watching Hollywood Movies at the theater after waiting in line for ten minutes in the cold and paying seven bucks for popcorn and instead we can not watch Hollywood Drivel on our phones.
Haven't seen a movie at a theatre in ages. Who wants to pay their ridiculous prices?
Now the rest of the world can join in not giving money to overindulged actors and over-inflated companies for overrated shows.
