Jack Nicklaus was down, playing poorly, and his pride was hurt.
The unwelcome, hurting question kept coming: When are you going to retire?
But it was a newspaper article which really enraged golfs Golden Bear.
It said I was dead, washed up, through, with no chance whatsoever. I was sizzling. I kept thinking, Dead, huh? Washed up, huh?
He answered with one of the great performances in golfs long history, a stunning, thundering, magnificent rally that brought Nicklaus a record sixth Masters championship on Sunday.

Just the other day the CBS final round coverage came up on my youtube timeline...
You can space thru to the key points, it was tremendous, I remember watching it live and it just kept getting better and better, especially on 15 when Nicklaus made eagle, then nearly holed out 16 to make birdie...
Remember watching it,was just getting serious about playing golf, serious as in can I break 100;)
the roars of the “patrons” were incredible...
a side bar...Jack won 6 masters. His 279 in 86 was his 3rd best score out of the 6....and he won 144k...peanuts today for a win in the golf world.
The AP was there? I guess the headline originally was: “Nicklaus wins Masters, Minorities and Women Disproportionately Affected.”
I remember the screams of.... He’s hot. He’s hot.
“Yes, sir!!!” - Vern Lundquist
After his birdie putt on 17.
Maybe the single greatest day in Golf I ever witnessed.
I don't know about greatest, but one of the most memorable.
I've always been an Arnie's guy, but have said that 'The Bear' was the greatest...ever, now with Tiger, I'm not sure.
I love golf, and have been down to a 8 handicap but now that I'm approaching 80, most of my scores are higher than my age, but I still will stay with it as long as I can move without {or minimal} pain.
With this virus crap, and the weather getting better, it's making everyone I play with stir crazy {and our wives are not liking us around the house}.
I really enjoy watching golf because I know how hard it is and how easy they make it look.
A non-golfer will never know how frustrating the game really is until they go out and try it.
“A non-golfer will never know how frustrating the game really is until they go out and try it.”
John Madden captured it in an SI article in fall of 1988, “YOU NEVER GET GOLF!”
To become a scratch golfer requires not only unimaginable hours of lessons, practice and play, but incredible self-control of ones emotions internally - to not let a terrible shot affect any shots after it.
I know. My dad was an incredible golfer and put a club in my hands almost before I could walk.
“was just getting serious about playing golf, serious as in can I break 100;)”
LOL. I broke 80 first time I ever played...then I had no more clubs left to break.
“For Golfers out their missing The Masters.”
Thanks for the link.
I recall that last round.
I was due in Casper, WY for two weeks of work. The 6:15 AM flight out of BZN was delayed due to a major snow storm...we finally got de-iced and headed for Casper.
The pilot defended to attempt to land but we went back up and re-routed to Denver due to too much snow in Casper.
I sat in the bar near my eventual departure gate and had a few beers while watching the Masters.
Initially I was alone then Jack would make a putt and I would cheer!
Soon there were lots of folks watching and when he drained that looooong eagle putt the crowd in the bar roared!
After Jack won, my flight boarded and I was quite happy for the slight flight delay.
