My idea of reusing the jugs is too diffult sending them back. Instead they should loosen the rules for restaurants and let them sell some of their bulk stuff for purchase.

BYOB and fill your empty milk jug from their 10 gallon bag. Bring an empty egg carton, etc.

Great information thank you everyone.

" 60% restaurants, Disneyland, etc. type places that buy in bulk. 40% is supermarkets"

I had no idea most people have been going out to eat like this. Sounds like food prices are going to jump.

Morons who base their decisions on movies and television series exhibit some weird assumptions and buying tendencies. It’s not the end of days, yet. To make matter worse, yes, some business interests are fomenting hysteria and scalping the masses.

One pork processing CEO (crook) told the media companies that there will be a food shortage, while only a handful of plants were temporarily closed for two weeks for infection cleanups. There are thousands of meat processing plants and the usual tsunami of meat on the way. But thanks to the crooks, prices are increasing.

There’s no general food shortage. We’re only seeing some momentary supply anomalies caused by a few avaricious psychopath administrators and many lazy minded, idiotic consumers. We’ll know to stock up slowly and gradually, when things are calmer and in advance of the next debacle.

Many years ago, I decided to plant a row of Zucchinis when we had a nice big vegetable garden in Pasadena.

It was like little shop of horrors. Squash everywhere.

Used to love it. Can’t abide the sight of it still today.

"They started baking.

Bread.

Apparently with bread machines.

Which are also sold out nationwide.

I tried bread machines nearly 20 years ago while living too far from grocery stores to buy bread every couple of days. Those machines took too much time to clean and didn't last long enough.

It was too easy to make bread by hand and put it in the oven, even at over 9,000 feet elevation. It doesn't really require kneading much more than enough to mix the dough. Only takes some practice, but doing it at lower altitude is easier. :)

These are probably people who’ve almost literally never boiled water.

And if you’re afraid of baking bread, it’s a good first step.

Then you have the older people who don’t want to knead because of arthritis.

I consider the bread baking bonanza, even if by machine, to be a huge plus for the uninitiated. They may get addicted :)

I’d forgotten about the need to adjust from production for restaurant and institutional markets to supermarket customers. Thanks for the reminder.

That was the best milk, too. The milk tastes amazing from a glass bottle.

The New York Times published a no-knead bread recipe a few years ago that was really popular. I gave it a try and I’ll be darned if it didn’t yield some fantastic bread.

True. There are so many different kinds of bread and ways to make it. I started it (typically), but my wife and daughter are way ahead in practice and variety. I only do it on special occasions, or when others are busy with other things. [Standard male admission there.]

Dunno if that means no demand, or the prices were too low to justify harvesting.

Probably some is demand, because people aren’t thinking about those things as much, and probably some is that there’s a lot of rejiggering and remarketing that isn’t happening.

Did everybody start baking all of a sudden?

Probably not a small number, considering the huge numbers of people that work in restaurants that are now not providing cooked meals. Heck, probably a lot of the waiters/waitresses, bussers, and supervisors that work in the restaurants didn’t cook their meals either.

There’s no reason it couldn’t be done again.

Well, except that the machinery to do so no longer exists, and someone would have to alter their production to produce the machinery to wash the bottles - or perhaps design whole new devices to wash and test the jugs.

That is weird. I have friends all over Europe and asas well as back home. There seem to be shortages in stores only in the USA now. I suspect people are hoarding far more than folks in Europe or Asia

Just a thought, if the crop is a loss, why not contact churchs, food banks, locals and donate the crop. Let them come and pick it up. Helping your neighbor, so to speak. The silver lining? The best PR you could ask for. People are going without. Donate. Simple.

Eggs and chicken are scarce in my area. One store was selling tjem for $6.99 for 18 count. Aldies was selling them for $1.00 a dozen with a limit of 2 doz. Per customer. The price of frozen cornish hens went up. I couldn't find whole roasting birds for under $2.99/lb. I did find 10 lb. Bags of leģs and thighs for .65/lb which is up from .59. So I bought 2 bags. I couldn't find sanitizer at any price. I like to keep a few towelettes in the car to wipe down the stwering wheel. I made my own hand sanitizer using soap, water and betadine. I like those bottles of foam soap and i reuse them. You end up using a lot less soap so it's very economical. Milk prices ate up too. Went from 1.79/ gallon to 2.29. Potatoes were expensive at 2.99 for a 5 lb bag for russets. I prefer reds and couldn't find any so I bought the 5 lb bag. Thats double the price. I began to see shortages way back in dec. And jan. I thought maybe since the store wasn't open 24 hrs, that they took longer to restock with a store full of customers. Anyway, I will be making up some soups/stews in jars (pressure canning) with what I have on hand.
