Still used today in Ireland and the UK. If in reference to a gay the normal term is poofter or a poof if being derogatory. If not being derogatory they just say gay.
A fag is a cigarette on the other side of the pond.
I Forgot to add this about the origin of the word.

In my scientific analysis, it is not nicotine that keeps smokers from getting Covid-19, but that no one wants to get near those stinky, hacking smokers anyway, so ‘Social Distancing’ is automatic and extended.

It’s also common sense smoking will only make your chances with covid-19 worse. Italy proved that.

Smoking doesn’t make anyone’s lungs healthier, that’s why it’s common sense covid will be worse with compromised lungs. It certainly won’t be better.
