Poor authorship. Sounds to me as they were using the magnets for iron based objects and happened to notice the cubes in the water.

I don't understand how he found them using a magnet - he says they are made out of lead?

This caught my eye too. I went back and read it again. It says he found them "WHILE magnet fishing" and that he "looked down and just saw them."

Well a tale from archeology class was that they were called Gypsies in Europe because they claimed to be from Egypt. The europeans were impressed by ancient Egypt and Egyptians. That made them easier marks for scams.
