“But, I will never ever understand the overly emotional attachment some people put upon a pet animal.”

That would be because a piece of you is missing.

It’s been said that Man domesticated the dog.

I’d say, the opposite is what happened.

Pets are different than people. They can’t betray you. Cheat on you. Take you to court. Say a bad word against you. They don’t plot to murder you. They don’t pit or play your kids against you.

Wow, you need to get some new friends.

I have loved our pets and cried when they died. I never understood what the big deal was until our first cat died. I look at our older dog that still acts like a pup - but he can’t act like a pup as long as he used to. Makes me sad to think when he will be gone.

But yeah - he isn’t my “child”.

What always bothers me is in a movie where people are getting killed left and right (including the good guys) and okay, it was sad that the good guy’s wife died, but the movie continues. But then when the guy’s dog gets killed a few scenes later there will be an audible reaction when the guy’s dog gets killed.

I think there is an “ethics” question that asks “If your dog and a stranger are drowning in a river, and you can only save one - which one do you save?”

“Pets are different than people. They can’t betray you.....”

You could always try that old experiment. Put your dog in the trunk of one car and your wife in another. Come back in 15 minutes and see which one is happy to see you!

I’m still hurting from losses in 2009, 2001, 1978, 1963 and 1945. To lose a dog...if you are an animal lover..is one of life’s most traumatic events. My sister experienced a loss last month and is devastated. Deepest sympathies to Mr. Levin. Remember the Rainbow Bridge mate.

Lost my dear Yogi one year ago this coming July 16. Best dog ever (for me). He was 14 years and 3 months, raised him from a pup. I was going to post on Mark’s pet page but just could not bring myself to do it. At my age I can’t bear to get another dog. Prayers up for Mark and I will come back to this thread to read all the posts. It is so easy to love a dog and they will love you right back.

I seem to recall he was particularly close to his prior dog. I know it hurts, but maybe he needs to adopt a cactus.

Me too, maybe he should buy a turtle.

My son and his wife cannot have children and cannot afford to adopt. Their pets are as close as they are going to get to having kids. It breaks their hearts when one of their pets die, but they get a rescue replacement as soon as possible, and it helps.

You are certainly projecting and reading a great deal into this issue.

What makes you think that people who love animals don’t love children as well, or put love for animals ahead of love for humans?

Having children, adopting them, etc., is a far greater responsibility than taking on an animal. Some people know their limits, and know what they are cut out for.

You sound like a busybody, to me; one of those strange people who are always ready to judge and complain about others and their choices. Makes me wonder about you...
