Moment of Glory: Bert Jones, Johnny Unitas' Colts replacement, won an MVP and became a Bill Belichick favorite

Bert Jones is looking around his office at the lumber company he has owned for decades, searching for signs a former NFL star runs the place. There aren’t many. There’s a picture of him in a Baltimore Colts uniform, at training camp with his son. And a Sports Illustrated cover on the wall. “It’s a neat picture,” Jones said, narrating the scene over the phone.

Interesting. I always wondered what happened to him.

As a Stiller fan I recall that in 1976 we slaughtered the Colts in the playoffs, and we played with both Rocky and Franco injured.

We lost the next week to the hated Raiders.

“Bert Jones was a tremendous player,” Belichick continued. “A tremendous player. Very athletic. He had an arm like no other, really. I’ve never seen a player with the kind of flexibility he had in his arm. The kind of whip and accuracy. He had a quick delivery. He was a tremendous quarterback in an era that was a little bit different. But if he played today and was healthy, [we’d all say], ‘This guy’s really good.’

“Once he hurt his shoulder, he was never really the same, but it wasn’t like he was ever not a good player. Some guys are up and down or whatever, but he was always good.”

Interesting- I’m an old fanatical BALTIMORE Colts fan. Never really got over what Irsay did to the city.

My family had Baltimore Colts season tickets from 1975 -1978 and I got to see the best of Bert Jones, Roger Carr, Lydell Mitchell and the Sack Pack. We had lots of fun!!

Bill Belly-Puke, a total disaster here in Cleveland for years, and then somehow goes elsewhere and becomes a genius. I’m so tired of hearing of his skill when considering how awful he was with the Browns. If it wasn’t for Brady, we’d never hear of him.

From the beginning of the 70s until today, you will rarely see a 'great' pro football coach without a great QB.

Every once in a while, a team can win a Super Bowl with defense, but rarely, and it is not repeatable.

In today's pass and tab version of flag football, the QB is the KING, the coach is important, but you can't coach a great arm from a chicken wing.

So ironic. Irsay stole the Colts away to Indy, and B-more stole the Browns away from Cleveland to make the Ravens. And they done pretty good!

I even remember feeling jilted when Shula left B-more for Miami, but he done pretty good there, too. Only perfect season in NFL history.

The Indy Colts punked-out on their chance for a perfect season when they benched Peyton Manning in a playoff game to “save him” for the Superbowl, and they lost the playoff game.

Shula had class an guts, and Miami went all the way.

I even remember Johnny U. went to San Diego after B-more.

Yeah, we’re getting up there in years, I guess.

True all dat, but one of the greatest arms and coaches ever, Marina and Shula, could not get a superbowl win together.

The NFL is not a beanbag league, nor for sissies.

So I gotta give props to dynasties like the Steelers and Pats.

Don’t forget the Raiders. They went to Super Bowls in the 60s, won one in the 70s, won two in the 80s, dropped out of contention in the 90s, then came back to go to the Super Bowl in the 2000s. Pretty good record.

I still maintain if you had Bill Belicheck coaching the Cowboys during Romo’s time Dallas would have won at least one, maybe two more Super Bowls.

Any team that wins 2 Superbowls in a decade or so has something special going on. The bottom-up draft and natural attrition will take down even the best. So to make a dynasty in the NFL takes a special quality.

Was that the playoff game where a small plane crashed into the end zone stands afterwards?

I’m from the area of Pittsburgh where Johnny U. grew up.
My parents attended a Catholic high-school where he was the quarterback for their biggest rival Catholic high-school.

You are correct, it was only about 10-15 minutes after the game ended.

It was lucky that the Stillers blew the Colts away, because the stadium was half empty before the game ended.

It could have been a real disaster.

Romo is a better announcer than he ever was as a QB, hell he's a better golfer than he was at QB.

From the time that Romo fumbled on the three yard line going in for a TD in a playoff against the Seahawks, Tony put down his trade mark, gag and puken blood, a true choker.

No coach can fix a choker and Tony Romo was the most pimped up over rated QB in modern pass and tab touch football.

Hell, I'd take Bubby Brister over Tony Romo.

The talking heads on espn loved Romo, and they loved making excuses for him when he crapped the bed.

He is a GREAT color man for announcing the games, and I love to listen to his analysis.

St. Justin's High School.

When Johnny U graduated he only weighed 145 but he was a late bloomer and grew taller and heavier in College.
