MLB Officially Locks in Shortened Season

Play ball! Major League Baseball has settled on a plan for a 60-game season that will begin around July 24, according to ESPN.

Following months of back-and-forth negotiations with the players’ union, the league’s owners voted to approve a 60-game schedule for the 2020 season on Monday. The players’ union agreed to the league’s terms on Tuesday night, tweeting: “All remaining issues have been resolved and Players are reporting to training camps.” Camps are set to open July 1.

MLB in March cancelled spring training for this year, due to the coronavirus pandemic. “This action is being taken in the interests of the safety and wellbeing or our players, clubs and our millions of loyal fans,” the league said then in a statement, adding that they will “continue to evaluate ongoing events” going forward and “have been preparing a variety of contingency plans” for the regular season.

MLB at the time joined fellow sports leagues the NBA and the NHL in shutting down operations in light of the outbreak. The NBA suspended its season on March 11 after All-Star player Rudy Gobert tested positive for the COVID-19 virus, and the NHL followed suit a day later.

The NBA earlier this month approved a plan to resume the 2019-20 regular season on July 31, by bringing 22 of 30 teams — excluding those without a realistic shot at the postseason — to the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, where they will play eight regular season games each, followed by a possible play-in tournament for the eighth seed (if necessary) and then the playoffs, which could stretch to Oct. 12 at the latest.\

i haven’t seen mlb say as much as the other sports.

The nfl and nascar have rocked their fan base.

Unless the younger folks don’t care but those youngsters are turning to UFC more and more.

I would probably like MLB baseball better if they had a much shorter season. The 162-game grind is excruciating. Even when I paid attention to baseball, I typically did not get into it until after the All-Star break.

I’ll be certain to boycott all professional sports, as they’re primarily going to be publicity events for whatever politically correct cause d’celebre at any given moment, going forward. It’s not like they’re going to miss my 14 k in seasons tickets, along with my parking and food concessions, but sooner or later, they’ll feel the pain if enough people feel as I do. They’ve been blowing my phone up with all kinds of “deals” to renew my tix, but they can pound sand, and I told them to stop harassing me. They killed the golden goose as far as I’m concerned.

Want to watch/listen, but without fans it just would not be the same. Corny, I know.

Will re-up my TuneIn subscription and listen to last year’s games for a couple of months.

The 162-game grind is excruciating.

Agreed. The season is too long.

I like the start of the season the most as every team (ok, not the Mariners and Pirates) has a shot and the players are hungry. By the end of July, some players seem like they have mailed it in.

I remember going to a late April game at Fenway back in the 1980s. It was like 36 degrees and sleeting. I only went because my company gave me tickets (that our clients turned down). That's not the weather for baseball! No wonder the clients didn't want to go.

Then when the playoffs start, the leaves are turning and it's back to cold again.

I'm thinking the season should go from June 1 to August 31. September will be for the playoffs with the World Series decided around the first day of Autumn.

Also, all regular season games should be played within the division (i.e. AL East; AL West) and pitchers need to take their turn at bat. None of this DH nonsense.

Baseball betting? That’s a tough sport to bet on. It doesn’t lend itself because the gap between best and worst is narrower than most other sports. Run counts aren’t high enough to use them in most games. I’ve only done it once, back in the ‘70s (Dodgers-Phillies playoffs, I won).

I imagine the proposition bets are endless these days.
