In a trial heat for the 1984 presidential election, former Vice President Walter Mondale is now leading President Ronald Reagan by a 53-44 percent margin. This is the first time in modern political history that an incumbent president has run behind his potential opponent so early in his term.

Maybe they were just polling Minnesota, because Reagan carried every other state.
Back then, New York and California weren’t willing to hand over their states to liberals. Now they will.
My memory is a little fuzzy, but I believe I recall Reagan won at least a state or two, despite facing the formidable Mondale.
This was nearly two years before the election so I’m not sure it’s terribly relevant to polls taken four months before an election.
This same poll was posted before. We were in a deep recession at that time. The election was almost 2 years away, not 4 months away.
Hey, a little off-topic - who was the FReeper that posted the World War II news articles here? Whatever happened to those?
That poll was nearly two years out from the election; a bit different from four months out.
Huh? That poll must have been only for Mondale’s home state of Minnesota because everybody in CA where I was at the time (it was my first Presidential Election I got to vote in) knew even a few months before the election that Reagan would win easy.
This latest Harris Survey, taken by telephone between January 2nd and 5th among a cross section of 891 likely voters screened from a larger cross section of 1,254 adults nationwide, amply demonstrates just how much President Reagan has slipped.Huh? This seems to say nothing at all.
Polls are a snapshot of the day or days they were taken, not the future.
Did Reagan quit?
Political polls have not improved since then.
Just like polls today, the ones who finagle the polls (Democrats) make up whatever numbers they believe will help their chosen candidate. Fake polls showing 10 point leads, regardless how early in the race they are published, help to sustain energy for the Dim. No different from what we saw 4 years ago, and no different from what we see today. The Dims produce these polls.
I believe that was the “World War II Plus 70 Years” article series (daily newspaper scans and discussion), courtesy of FReeper Homer_J_Simpson. I miss seeing those.
I detect a certain pattern in the way pollsters, for decades, have shown DEM candidates to be ahead of GOP opponents, only to be proven wrong by voters.
Mondale over Reagan ...Reagan won
Dukakis over GHW Bush ...Bush won
Gore over GW Bush ...Bush won
H Clinton over Trump ...Trump won
Biden over Trump ...???
No. The poll was taken in May 1988, 6 months before election.
Oops, I posted the wrong map in 19.
