Readout from First Lady Melania Trump’s Conference Call with FEMA’s Youth Preparedness Council
whitehouse.gov ^ | Jul 21, 2020 | White House, First Lady Melania Trump

Today, First Lady Melania Trump joined a conference call with the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Youth Preparedness Council (YPC) during their annual summit. The Council was formed in 2012 to bring together youth leaders interested in supporting disaster preparedness. Through national and local projects, they strive to engage children and provide the tools and resources needed to educate them on disaster preparedness.

Administer Gaynor provided welcome remarks and discussed the importance of YPC and the many achievements of its members. The Administrator then introduced the First Lady, who thanked the YPC members for allowing her to join the Summit to hear more about the ways America’s children can learn how to prepare for emergencies in their homes, schools, and communities.

She expressed gratitude to the YPC members for their leadership to ensure that their families, friends, and neighbors are equipped with the tools they need to stay safe. Mrs. Trump also noted that our nation’s children remain one of the most at-risk during and after disasters, and the important work FEMA’s Youth Preparedness Council does to help foster the creative and innovative solutions that make their communities more resilient.

The First Lady thanked Administrator Gaynor and the YPC council members for this initiative and leadership, stating: “One of the main pillars of my Be Best Initiative focuses on the well-being of children, which includes the importance of educating young people from all backgrounds how to prepare for emergency situations. This Council embodies that pillar by integrating your voices and vital lessons for children into emergency preparedness. It is never too early for young people to learn how to react and cope during emergency situations.”

My comment : Prepare yourself and your family for whatever probable disaster and have a plan,.. and practice the plan.
After you handle a probable disaster, then discuss with the family and plan for any possible disaster.
Have a bug-out bag for each family member, and have them personally responsible for it's contents, with seasonal adjustments.

For example : If you live near a river, discuss a plan for possible flooding, and routes with highest topography
and fewest bridges, which allow for quick and easy evacuation.
If in an area where riots and looting has occurred, know the safest main routes out of harms way.
Yes, it's a case of personal responsibility, being situation-ally aware, logic rather than crisis emotional reaction,
and using the OODA Loop !

A suggested site to see what kind of emergency supplies are available,
I believe that the Amish community is one of the more prepared folks as a culture and a community to handle disaster.

A list of non-electric appliances, food storage, emergency lighting , supplies, etc.,
can be found at Lehman's , located in Amish country in Ohio.
You can see the products available, and price compare, including shipping costs.
Lehman's have 'in-store' and online sales, but some of the listed emergency products are listed there :

I’ve bought stuff from Lehman’s and love the place.

I’d really like to stop by their actual store some day, but am not sure the bank account could handle it.

My family, perhaps through bad luck or perhaps because this is normal, dealt with two major disasters. In both cases, prior practice helped a lot. One in particular still turned out quite badly, but both came out better than they would have without the entire family knowing and practicing the plans.

Our reviews usually started with "it sure is hot outside, let's talk about ..." or "it's miserably cold outside, let's talk about ..." That always got theatrical groans, followed by some excitement; my kids actually enjoyed the training (always followed by special food treats). We'd then go through the actions needed, including leaving the house regardless of the weather, or whatever was appropriate for that situation, one by one for the entire list of emergencies in the plan.

I hear that ! Me too !
Some of their product is indeed pricey, but they stand behind their products with a reasonable warranty.
I believe that they still mail out an annual catalogue to products which they carry .
But Lehman's serve as a good starting point in terms of what emergency supplies are available,
along with brand names, so that you can price compare.
Besides Amish made tools and cookware, they also seasonally sell Amish heirloom seeds.

Even if you don’t buy from them, and/or are new to prepping, it’s a great place to start. Start small with some water/wind proof matches or some water purifying tabs (both under $15) and build from there.

One thing I’ll never be without is a wind-up radio. Dad bought me one years ago and it has come in handy during a few bad storms or to know what’s going on in the outside world when you’re out of power or off the grid.

P.S. Thank you, Melania, for caring about kids. Great age to start training as far as prepping goes.

Thank you for this.

In these turbulent times, here are some everyday items a prepper should carry: a belt with a large buckle, an all steel pen, a large steel carabiner that fits over your knuckles. All innocuous items... until you need them.

Compare this to the Wookie who effectively trained kids to trash the meals she forced on kids’ school cafeterias. Even if they don’t pay particular attention to the subject material some of it will stick and maybe save their lives when everyone else is panicking.
