The Hero With a Thousand Options: The Anti-Mythology of the Star Wars Sequels
Liberty Island Magazine ^ | August 31st, 2020 | Shant Eghian

The original Star Wars trilogy stands as one of the greatest cinematic trilogies ever made. It spawned a franchise that consists of additional movies, novels, comic books, video games, and even radio dramas. The genius of the Star Wars franchise is in how it created something that feels entirely original, but is deeply indebted to millennia of stories that came before it. Star Wars contains influences from not only space adventure serials and Westerns, but also Arthurian tales, Greek Myth, and even religion.

That being said, the Star Wars movies have not always lived up to their original standard. For years, George Lucas’s prequel films detailing the transformation of Jedi Anakin Skywalker into the evil Darth Vader were reviled as some of the worst films ever made. When Disney announced its acquisition of the franchise and subsequent plans to make new movies in 2012, fans went wild. It couldn’t possibly get any worse than the prequels.

Or could it…?

While the prequels weren't great, they weren't completely terrible either. The recent trilogy was garbage. Well, I only saw the first two. But I'm pretty sure that Rise of Skywalker was a disaster. When I saw horses galloping on the hull of a metal starship during the previews I knew that this had really happened:

These were the Star Wars movies:

Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope (1977)
Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi (1983)

The others are BS...

The prequels were bad because they were poorly executed, primarily because Lucas was given total control and didn’t have a team who collaborated and challenged him on certain things. Lucas is terrible at writing dialog for example. The sequels were just terrible in concept AND execution.

The best thing about the prequels is RedLetterMedia.

Well, opinions differ. I didn’t think the prequels were awful. Just so-so. At least they weren’t woke.

The author of the essay is right on target.

The third trilogy is liberalism writ large - rejection of the past, deifying the individual, self actualization is nirvana.

I agree with you, bad was a bit too strong of a word. The prequels could have been great, had Lucas had the same kind of collaboration he did during the original trilogy. That’s what is frustrating with them.

The sequels made by Disney were pure garbage and as cynical as could be in terms of their design.

Imagine if someone had said, “Er, George, having people sitting on couches and expounding about monetary and trade policy is not actually very entertaining.”

the trilogies were awful

they had the most monotonic, passive line delivery i’ve ever seen

and the storylines were crappy

midichlorians suck ass

jar jar, worse than the ewoks and the gay english droid

now to be fair

the specal effects were advancing the art, and were very good

The ending of Star Wars is literally cultural appropriation. The last Skywalker is dead and perfect Mary Sue names herself Skywalker.

I liked the fan theory that Jar Jar was a secret Sith Lord. It makes him more interesting and gives you a reason to dislike him beyond being annoying.

One variation compared his antics to the drunken kung fu master style. And he’s moving his hands while manipulating their minds. It would be one of the only reasons to include such an idiot in the Senate. But no, they replace him with dull white guy Count Dooku.

I never understood when they retitled the original one, A New Hope. What is it referring to; what is the hope that they are talking about? Who was hoping for what?

I’m sorry I’m not a staunch Star Wars fan, but have enjoyed seeing them.

“These were the Star Wars movies:”

I agree with your list but I have to add “Rogue One” to it. I don’t know how Disney managed to make just one brilliant Star Wars movie, but they did.

Personally I would rate “Rogue One” above “Return of the Jedi”, the mediocrity that infested the rest of these films began to become evident there.

Spaceballs got it right, every Star Wars sequel might as well have been called “Star Wars - The Search For More Money”

A little repetitive but a good analysis. Everything in the sequels centered around the idea that a women could achieve anything if she believed in herself.

The problem is there is nothing there. Put a baby girl (or guy) on a planet by herself with unlimited food and nothing else. What would happen during the next 80 years?

All the other characters in the stories exist to cater to Rae’s needs as they evolve.
